LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Johnny Ramone, guitarist and co-founder of the seminal punk band ``The Ramones'' that influenced a generation of rockers, has died. He was 55.

Ramone, who had been fighting a five-year battle with prostate cancer, died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home surrounded by friends and family, said the band's longtime artistic director Arturo Vega.

"It cannot be stressed enough how influential the Ramones were to the punk music scene in England...we would spend hours, days, weeks just playing along to their records..." - Joe Strummer

"I wanna be sedated..." - the ramones

5. That sucks, but.....

I blame the Ramones for a lot of the "dumbing-down" of culture and in particular rock music of the last twenty-five years. Apart from "Beat on the Brat," I never liked them very much. Sure, I know they're influential and stuff...no need to remind me....just my 2 cents.....

Plus, Johnny was a republican.

6. I blame Johnny for being a Republican

but I don't blame the Ramones for having too much influence over the culture at large. They were more a reaction to the dumbing down of culture than a cause of it. In my opinion, I hasten to add.

7. as I said above...
if Joe strummer thought the Ramones were one of the most influential bands and the one of the reasons HE and Mick Jones got into punk music, then the Ramones cannot possibly be responsible for the dumbing down of culture and rock music. Besides, what else was available at the time: Kansas, Journey, Yes, etc?

The Ramones were part of the wonderful CBGB scene of the mid-70s that spawned a lot of wonderful music.
