What were they thinking? What does it take to prompt two teenagers onto a highway overpass to hurl a barrage of fruit down at rush-hour traffic with a potential for deadly results?
Think "Jackass," says Detective Tom Lauf. The pear-throwing youths were apparently trying to videotape panicked drivers or actual smashups in imitation of stunts staged on the wild-eyed MTV show, police said.
The two, dropping rock-hard pears, could have wound up killing people driving north on Interstate 95 in Northeast Philly about 5 p.m. Tuesday.
"Either they just purely didn't care or they didn't realize what kind of damage they might have done," said Sgt. Mark O'Fee, who, like Lauf, works out of the Northeast Detective Division. "They were just throwing stuff out there, trying to be funny... They just have no concept of how far this could have gone."
Add one to the tally of dangerous stunts inspired by "Jackass." The most notorious: several people severely burned two years ago after they mimicked an actor in a fireproof suit who let himself be set ablaze and "roasted" on a grill.
"It's named perfectly," said O'Fee of the TV show, "because like - what a jackass!"
