From the Usenet group rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1970s. Can you, say ":puke:?"

RELIVING THE MUSIC OF THE SEVENTIES

We all associate songs and music with events in our life. Many songs hold special memories for us. We fondly remember the songs that were playing when we went to our first dance, the songs the school band attempted to play during half time at the high school football games, the songs that we heard on our first date, or the songs we heard on the radio while driving our first car.

The music of the 1970's is probably the most impressive and most recognized of any era. The artists of the 1970's provided us with numerous songs we loved to dance to and sing along with. At that time most bands actually played their own instruments and didn't need to sequence part of it.

Remember how we used to listen to the music then? At first we had eight track players in our cars, then we moved upward to cassette players. Vinyl records were the most popular way to listen to our favorite music. Every week you could go to your local variety or record store and pick up the new #1 song on a 45 record for under $1.00. Of course, there was always the radio to listen to - most of the popular channels were on am radio. We had many styles of music to listen to, including the bubble gum music of David Cassidy and the Partridge Family, soft rock of Barry Manilow, the great dance tunes of the Bee Gees and the Commodores, rock of Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin, the brass band sounds of Chicago, or the disco beat of Chic and Donna Summers.

The nostalgia of the 1970's music lives on today. We can listen to it on our local 70's'radio station, on cds, on mp3, download it on our computer, and burn it onto cds. For those of us who prefer records, we can still purchase them at record stores, antique or second hand stores, or yard sales. Of course, many of us have held on to our own record collections and record players and can pull them out at any time when we need to relive those nostalgic days of the 1970's. Some bands are still performing after more than 30 years. There's nothing like seeing your favorite 1970's performers live in concert!

The music of the 1970's is still popular with people of all ages - not just those who grew up with it. It never grows old. It only gets better with each passing decade.

Why is it that the only people who AREN'T nostalgic for the '70s and '80s are we who actually lived through them?! :eyes:

1. Why does anyone miss eight track players?
In the middle of a song <kerchunk>, oh yeah, it just changed tracks.
She needs to listen to the Temptations, doesn't she?

8. Ugh, The Hudson Brothers...
I saw that documentary on PBS too. It's sad, because those guys never wanted to be portrayed in such a light.

5. All I'm saying is, '70s music is not the best music ever.
For sheer volume and quality, the '60s have the '70s beaten by a country mile. For that matter, so do the '50s.

 i mean, i really dont like 50's music at all. its all personal, and a LOT of my favorite bands got started in the 70's (though a lot died then too).

edit: read the original post farther, and your replies. NOW i get it. (so sue me, its been a long day at work):)

6. Great Scott! I've been trying to forget the 70s-80s music!
Now the 40s and 50s--those are tunes to dance to!

But I do have an old 8-track tape I'd sell ya for a buck. Has "Horse with No Name" on it!

BUSH MUST GO!!

7. sorry - you are dead wrong
the 70s were the last great era of creative expansion

jazz, rock, fusion, after that it got all digital and the performer was taken out to be replaced by flashing images on a screen.

9. Excuse me; did you actually read what that person wrote?
She was singing the praises of David Cassidy, Barry Manilow, and the Bee Gees. Hell, she's probably never even heard of fusion!

i dont really care enough about personal music taste to get into any kind of argument about it, but i think she's just listing popular bands. eh, whatever. doesn't matter in the big picture

The 70's were great for music. The trick is that you have to be old enough and have some taste.

15. What you really mean is...
...you have to wade through a lot of bullshit to get to the good stuff. That I can agree with, but if you read the original post, you'll see that the writer obviously listened to nothing but Top 40 music in the '70s.

18. What I really meant, is what I said!
Sounds like there are shortages of the 2 qualities I mentioned previously. Plenty of excellent music from the 70's no matter the flavor. To each their own! ;)

13. If you like Progressive Rock the 70's WERE the best years!
Edited on Wed Sep-15-04 11:05 PM by Lovecrafty
Yes had their "Fragile". Rush had their "Hemispheres". King Crimson had their "Larks Toungues in Aspic". If you like Progressive Rock, then you can appreciate the 70's for the original and thought provoking music it created! And don't forget my personal favorite of the era: MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA!!!! Jean-Luc Ponty was great too!

14. Just so happens, I hate progressive rock.
I don't even like the phrase, much less the music!

And as I once again must reiterate, the person who wrote that piece was referring to 1970s Top 40, not the exoteric stuff. Christ on a breadstick, did any of you bother to read the piece in question?!

17. Hey I loved the 70's
And I lived through them!!!!

Honestly, 70's disco is some of the best pop around, and 70's gave us some great stuff, more so than the 80's.

I know of your fondness for the early60's, but that stuff just doesn't do it for me. Gimmie 70's era soul over 60's soul anyday.

22. JD Considine
wrote a column some years ago making a pretty strong case that the 70's were the best era for rock music - essentially, that the various strains of experimentation, sometimes sloppy and ill focused in the 60's, came to fruition in the 1970's. Rock reinvented itself, re-discovered its roots, laid solid groundwork for subgenres like metal and punk, and basically expanded its reach.

By the end of the seventies, radio consultants and corporations had completely taken over.

This column you cited here, though, is simplistic rubbish, with no real insights to speak of.

But as a freelance critic for almost 26 years, I can muster some respect for Considine's POV - at least pertaining to rock music, and to a lessor extent, urban music as well.
