3. The correct answer is Yes
Part of why he's so fascinating is that he investigates his darker impulses and strives to understand them, and integrate them with his more enlightened side.

But of course you knew that already.

4. R. Crumb is Like the Bean King
He's allowed complete license to do anything for the entire festival, at the end of which he's taken out and ritually sacrificed.

Sometimes you just have to open up the lid and see what's inside. It's not always pretty.

20. I was playing in a band that was doing a musical about his comix..
in which he was involved as a consultant (obviously), and eventually as a banjo player. This was in 1986, I think. He was, as has been mentioned, sketching all the time, and he did a drawing of me playing my string bass, with a couple of women in the picture: a vision of loveliness, to whom I was playing, and a shrew approaching in the background. He titled it "This is Real Life." It's one of my coolest possessions.

21. I'll try to photograph the drawing and post it here; it may take a couple
of days. When we were doing this project, I got to hang out with him for a while; it was fascinating to observe his observation of things. He certainly doesn't enjoy recognition by "fan boys."

8. Definitely not racist, he's heavily into the classic blues music.
See the movie "Crumb" for more insight into this complex and dark genious. There's a lot of layers to this onion.

15. I think if you asked him, he'd say Both
He is absolutely fearless in revealing what a twisted, angry, frightened, passive-aggressive little freak he is, and by extension, we all are. He doesn't hate women, blacks or Jews. He hates the entire human race, including (and mostly) himself. I adore him.

Best Crumb reads: the Weirdo comics, Hup!, Self-Loathing Comics.

16. Watch me think this one out
Angelfood McSpade, whose picture Ribofunk posted here, is the worst sort of caricature. After I saw that one, probably about 1971, I never could regain the joy I felt upon first encountering "Plunge into the Depths of Despair Comics" and some of his other early classics.

Maybe he was satirizing white male perceptions of black females as halfwitted sex bombs, but if he was, it was too subtle for me, and I'm usually pretty damn good at picking up stuff like that.

The Cheap Suit Serenaders I was ambiguous about; I think it's possible to be a serious fan of early blues and jazz and still have no problem with the "plantation" or "Jim Crow" mentality. Wasn't Lee Atwater a knowledgeable blues aficionado?

I didn't vote because I really don't know enough about R. Crumb and I haven't seen any of his work of the last, I don't know, 20 years. With that disclaimer, I think I'll go back and vote for "racist twerp".
