"I haven't had a period in like ten years"
Is what was just said to me, my co-worker is having stomach cramps, she had a hysterectomy ten years ago.

Back to the focus.

I'm a 25-year-old man, and I don't need to hear that kind of stuff. I don't come into work and talk about....whatever problems I may have do I?

I've said it before and I'll say it again - a 25-year-old male does not belong in an office full of middle aged, predominantly divorced women.

My sisters are younger than me.
It certainly hasn't hurt my adjustment to hear them talk about stuff like this or to hear them gripe about how the guys they knew were acting like assholes.
If anything it's helped.
I can see you are so "much more well adjusted for it," seeing as how you are so well adjusted that you feel the need to complain about behavior by your co-workers that I wouldn't even blink at myself and you're doing it on a message board to boot.

79. Well there ya go...
I personally don't object to hearing the intimate details of men's problems. I'm sure there are some women who do. By the same token, I've met men who could or couldn't deal with listening to my female gripes. The trick is in knowing who can deal, and who can't.

Your coworker probably thought you were a sympathetic soul; and for that, I think you should feel honored. Since you find it difficult to handle, though, I'd suggest that you gently tell her that you're sorry she isn't feeling well; and recommend that she speak with a doctor, because you're uncomfortable talking about women's bodily functions.

Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 05:40 PM by tigereye
I had a housemate who was from Indonesia and he was the only one who didn't run screaming when the females started to talk about menstruation and such. What a brave guy he was. I think some guys would prefer there was still a menstrual hut in the village.

Actually, I don't really like hearing about guy stuff all the time, either. Middle-aged women, how scary. At least they aren't talking to you about how horny they are, Hey Hey. Or are they. ;)

What used to bug me at work was people who talked about TV shows all the time, while I sat there reading the Village Voice.

A hysterectomy is anatomical.

Or, adenoids and orgasms anyway.

Not that I particularly like health talk at work...but it's pretty omnipresent...

It's surgery and stuff coming out of bodies, respectively. I really have no desire to hear about my (male) boss's kidney stones and root canal, but I don't consider it problematic to work with men because of it.

26. Baby
butch up! You could be changing diapers in a few years. What are you going to do then?

Seriously, if you make friends with them, (and they are already confiding "intimate sexual details" to you) you could eventually learn a lot of cool secrets about how to please women. Sure, you have to put up with a little bitching, but believe me, that is an ETERNAL problem.

In contrast I have spent a lot of times working in places that are mostly men. I just keep my ears open and try to learn.

69. yeah there is a line
I worked in an office where almost all the managers were men who were incredibly crude; rape jokes, comments about women's bodies, complaining to me about one gorgeous staff I had who didn't wear a bra. I could have given a shit how she dressed. I told them not to look! etc. I had to bitch at them regularly, in as reasonable a way as I could. Eventually one of them had a sexual harrassment charge filed and that made them take notice. I had tried to tell them that this way of operating wouldn't fly anymore. And this was in a mental health organization! But I don't think women should be going around making jokes about men's bodies, either, or should cross that same boundary. Not sure what the answer is, maybe just to tell people that that kind of stuff makes you uncomfortable.

76. Try this one: I don't want to hear about anyone's shit at work
Leave your problems, and I mean all of them, at home. I am there to work, not to make buddies or listen to personal shit.

She has this great bit about 'if straight guys had a period'. It's a riot.

Example:

Dude, dude, dude, check it out. Dude, dude. I just fuckin' knew I's gonna start my period, I just fuckin' knew I's gonna start my period, I just fuckin' knew it.

Dude, dude, I fuckin' start m' period right? The next day was super bowl sunday. HOW FUCKED UP IS THAT????

Dude, dude you gotta tampon in yer truck?
