Do people REALLY still fear Communists????
I heard of a bumper sticker that reads "Democrats never met a Communist they didn't like."

Isn't the Red Scare over? Doesn't that seem rather antiquated? It's almost like being afraid of Celts or Druids, to me.

I laughed out loud when I heard of it. Are republicans stuck in the 1950s or what???

1. Not unless they're Cuban.
That message will never resonate with the younger crowd - "Mommy, what's a Communist?"

3. No kidding
I bet even my pretty geo-politically aware kid wouldn't know what a Communist is. She does know what a parliamentary monarchy is, though. That has nothing to do with it. Just being random.

19. No, can't fear Al -Qaeda, cuz then we'd have to talk about it,
and talking about it would remind people that no one (meaning our War Criminal AWOL treasonous lackluster piece of smegma-encrusted presidential turdbowl) is doing anything about Al-Qaeda, and especially nothing about bin Laden (who? Whodat?!), and might make people remember that we shouldn't be in Iraq.

So, best to talk about commies because, since they don't exist, no one can ever bitch that there isn't enough being done about them.

12. Not just the 50s
I can remember inthe early 80s, a social studies teacher scaring the crap out of us. She was talking about how we lived in an area that the USSR would likely target (Wright-Pat AFB), and how it was only a matter of time until we could all kiss our asses goodbye.

28. they're irrational then
I am just saying, I don't hate communism but I can see why someone who has like Russian or whatever relatives, I can understand. Of course, people hear the word communism and they think of villians but I think many of communism is good, but its been practiced terribly.

17. I am scared of Joseph Stalin and Pol Pot
He was a communist. Now communism in theory, no that doesn't scare me, neither does Marx and Engels but Stalin, Pol Pot, definely scare me. Now I do admire people like Dubcek.

20. Theories don't generally scare me
unless they are theories like "Maybe if we kill all the Iraqis, we'll win."

Those kinds of theories scare me, but economic theories never do.

2. Were there knuckles dragging out the side window?

3. Was it next to one that said "Lester Maddox for Governor?"

25. The fear of communism was portrayed the same as terra is now.
I was never afraid of communism, and I was part of the kid generation that was taught to hide under your desk in school. I remember Kruschev baaaaaanging his shoe on the desk ans saying we will kill you. But I always thought they didn't want to die any more than we did, and I still think I was right.

The problem with this conflict today is that our opponents are willing to die for their beliefs. But they have told us why they are willing to do that. They don't want infidels in their holy land. So why don't we get the hell out? If they want to fight against each other, that's their problem, not ours.

We should not be trying to rule the world!

Aging communists in their 80's and 90's once again threaten our freedoms.

Seriously I knew some communists in the early 1980's (through a group called NAM that some of them ended up in). Sharp people, but even then they were really old.

37. No.
I fear lunatics who steal signs from my yard, claim to be Americans, inhibiting my first amendment right (not to mention breaking the law), send our children off to die in Iraq and don't have the fucking guts to attend a funeral or even look at their faces, don't speak a dead soldier's name, don't sign their own kids up for the same, refuse to acknowledge the latest American beheadings, believe that the economy is wonderful because of some fucking $600 check they received from GW 3 years ago, believe 911 was Iraq's doing, believe the world was created in 7 days, Vietnam documents (I don't care!), are obsessed with Dan Rather and the CBS fuck up (again, I don't care!), Kitty Kelly and the Bush pervs and loons.

I'm fucking sick of stupid crap. Can anyone please to get down to business. We are dying D-Y-I-N-G in Iraq. Why can't they focus on that?

40. Yes. TNT still shows "Operation Red Dawn"
If you don't know about that movie, it's about the biggest piece of anti-Communist propaganda there is. First, there is the ridiculous plot opening that the Soviet Union invades and occupies the United States (like that would've ever happened... more like THERMONUCLEAR WAR!!!!).

Then, a ragtag group of American high school students convienently find a weapons cache in their school's basement or something (it wasn't particularly clear to me how they obtained the military-grade weapons). And, of course, they manage to overrun the Soviet occupation forces, despite being outnumbered about 100,000:1 and having an enormous tactical disadvantage, seeing as how they're STUPID HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.

I don't believe a more idiotic, fear-mongering movie has ever been made.
