7. Omaha has the Benson Bunnies
Opposing teams come up with some pretty humorous cheers, usually stuff like "Kill the Bunnies!"

A football team called the Bunnies just can't be taken seriously.

Back in the early 20th century, Ballard was a mill town north of the Seattle city limits. Now it's a part of Seattle, and the school mascot is the Beavers :(

19. Ah, the Dickinson Midgets.
I have a friend on the NDSU football team who used to play for Dickinson Trinity, a private school there. He said one of the reasons he didn't want to play for Dickinson was because of the nickname.

Now the Devils Lake Satans. I LOVED that name!!! I wish the overly-PC crowd didn't get rid of it.

13. not high school, but...
Not my high school team (they were the Panthers) but my college teams were the UC Irvine Anteaters. Our battle cry was "Zot, Zot, Zot!" Happens when you build a college in California in the late 60's.:D

And I believe that UC Santa Cruz has the Banana Slug as a mascot - but I can't swear they have any sports teams.

22. Interesting story on that.
When Pekin was founded, the founders could not agree on the name. So they pulled out a globe, spun it, and had one of the wives stick a hat pin in it. Landed in China, obliterating the "g". And since the town was named after a Chinese city, I guess the nickname "Chinks" came naturally....

They are now the Dragons.

23. My junior high was the Thomas Trojans
Which as a name isn't so bad, but, well....we were 13.

The school song was to the tune of "On, Wisconsin" (and I'm not kidding):

On, you Trojans, on you Trojans
On to victory!
Cheer on your good old Thomas Trojans
On to victory (rah rah rah).

I fancied myself Weird Al through most of my childhood and adolescence, so of course the song got a makeover:

On, you Trojans, on you Trojans
Preventing pregnancy!
Put on your good-old latex Trojan
Or a daddy you will be...

I hear they're the Thomas Timber Wolves now...

31. Yuma Criminals, Yuma High School, Yuma AZ.
Yuma had the territorial prison for many years before Arizona became a state. Before the high school was built, they had some classes at the prison. (Which was a real hole, as prisons go....) The mascot became the Criminals.

(Yuma is pronounced YOOO-ma, not YUM-a.)

Not my alma mater, but our rival.

From a former Frankfort Hot Dog.

Area schools loved to have us for their homecoming games because there are so many float possibilities when you play the Hot Dogs.

35. The name may be a joke but the team was once a power house.
For a number of years we held the record for state basketball titles. All during the twenties and thirties under Everett Case.

We made it to the sweet sixteen a twice and came within a couple of points of going to the state finals when I was in high school.
