1. Beatles in Chicago 1964.
Their first time in the Windy City.

No, I did not scream. Damn screaming made it difficult to hear the music. And I was just a young curmudgeon of 15 at the time.

Hands down no group has ever come even close to their performance. No warm up group just 3 hours of Zepplin and nothing but Zepplin. Wow what class they had.

I say "of all people" because I wasn't into Elvis at all. My sister was and had an extre ticket and it was truly the best show I've ever attended. The man was a showman, no doubt about it.

48. Hey, I saw them on that tour!
In Mobile, Alabama, though...And yes it was great, Eric rocked! Sunshine of Your Love, Badge, Layla, nothing slowhand about that show! (well except when Yvonne Elliman sang "I Don't Know How to Love Him") :)...
Santana opened and late in the show Carlos came out and jammed with Eric...It was really interesting seeing the differences in style between the two...It was a great show!

25. Montreal Symphony Orchestra/Charles Dutoit, Tanglewood, July 1990
Their recordings are so lush, I thought they had to be over-produced. That is, until I heard them live. Sonic beauty! I was a student at Tanglewood that summer, and I became friends with the Head Usher, who snagged me some great seats.

I'm lucky enough to have heard almost every major symphony orchestra in the world (I work at a famous east coast venue which hosts several touring ensembles every season), but this is the one that still sticks out.

105. Agreed!
Although my favorite was probably Sam Boyd Silver Bowl, Las Vegas, June 1994 because it was 115 degrees out and we managed to be the only people to get in the stadium with a cooler full of ice, water & candy. They searched us 5 times on the way in & there was a "no ice cooler" rule, but we bribed the cops with mini Snickers. People were really tripping out that we made it in with it.

33. it's a tie . . .
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - opening show of the Born to Run tour in 1975 (I think) . . . is a classic, small town theater in upstate New York . . . it was the in the town where I'd recently graduated from college . . . we had had him twice for college-sponsored shows before anyone know about him, and he liked the theater so much he decided to kick off his tour there . . . despite the fact that it was during the summer and the town was virtually deserted, the word was starting to get out and he packed the place . . . they came from all over, and it was a hell of a show . . .

and

Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden - 1972 or 73 . . . opening act was Stevie Wonder, who had just started performing again after recovering from an accident . . . knowing only of Little Stevie Wonder at the time, he was a revelation . . . and then went on to record his quartet of seminal albums -- Music of My Mind; Talking Book; Innervisions; and Fulfillingness First Finale . . .

runners up:

- John Mayall at the Fillmore East - 1969 . . . this was the show that they recorded for the Turning Point album . . . opening act was the Preservation Hall Jazz Band . . . still have the ticket stub . . .

- Ramblin' Jack Elliott at the Newport Folk Festival - also 1969 . . . he was onstage, drunk and rantin' and ravin', at the exact moment that Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon . . . a guy had set up a little portable tv on the tailgate of his VW microbus, and I was looking first at Armstrong, then at Ramblin' Jack, trying to decide what to do . . . Ramblin' Jack won . . . figured I could catch the moon landing on replay . . . :)

His first show outside the Northeast--a hippie club called "Liberty Hall". I believe the record company was trying to see whether his act would impress a non-Yankee audience.

It did. The last night of the engagement, most of the (original E-Street) band let the stage, Bruce sat down & sang "The Fever".

45. Jon Bon Jovi
I was in the hospital for a kidney infection and had tickets to the Bon Jovi concert. I snuck out of the hospital with a leader IV on. The one that you leave on if there is more to go in. I left a note telling them where I was going to be, under the pillow.

I got there and ended up being let down in the front because most of the fans had left. I got most of the people that were still there to make some noise with me and beat on the seats with me.

We ended up bringing Bon Jovi out on at least 2 singles and the whole band on at least 2 songs. It was a blast until the ambulance came to get me for my medicines. NOT FAIR!

But we all had fun.

77. I second Tool
but couldn't decide between Berkeley in '02 where it was a small venue but they didn't play 3rd Eye or The Patient or the one in Long Beach where they did, but it was in an arena (although I was on the floor 50 feet away). Probably have to go with the latter since it also had the fact that it was three blocks from my apartment going for it too.

Edited on Fri Sep-24-04 02:39 AM by Qst4Q
Poplar Creek 3rd row

He had about a 13 piece band and Tito Puente on timbales... Albert King came out about half way through and sat in for 2 or 3... Neville Brothers opened

also seen great concerts by Bob Seeger, Willie Nelson, Dire Straits (Brothers in Arms), DMB with Taj Mahal...

Very jealous of all who saw Zep, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, and that Clapton/Santana tour

Worst show:

It's a tie between the Cars and Loverboy/Dokken... don't ask why I went... free ticks and drugs... they didn't help.

56. Semisonic, the Flops, and (most of) trip shakespeare
At first avenue last winter.

For those of you who don't know:

Trip was a local minneapolis band comprised of

John munson
Matt and Dan Wilson'
Jake Schlicter
Elaine Harris

They split up in....1993

Semisonic is John, Dan, and Jake ("closing time" et al.)

The flops is a ficional band from an indie movie shot in the twin cities, It is comprised of John and Matt (and sometimes Jake) They started playing locally a few years ago.

Matt has a solo album too, which is awesome!

Anyway, they all got together at first ave for a show (except elaine)

What a fun night

60. Van der Graaf Generator
Beacon Theatre, New York, 1976, their only performance in the USA ever.

Or maybe it was Traffic and Fairport Convention at the Boston Tea Party in 1970. Sandy Denny had left Fairport, but they still had Richard Thompson, and Traffic was the three piece band that recorded John Barleycorn Must Die.

Or maybe it was King Crimson in Providence RI in 1974, the penultimate show for this version of Crimso, a performance Fripp thought so highly of that he released it in its entirety in the Great Deceiver box set.

Or maybe it was Richard Thompson at Harvard University's Sanders Theatre-- I forget what year, but he was touring behind Amnesia. He and drummer Kenny Aronoff had this great can-you-top-this drum and guitar duel, that ended up with the whole band crashing into "Shoot Out the Lights."

Or maybe it was Cul de Sac at Tonic in NYC in 2000 (plus or minus one), when I took that killer bass solo that made even Nick (Dr. Nerve) Didkovsky sit up and take notice.

92. When I saw the Five
They were washed up. I was SO disappointed. They played the Berklee School of Music's hall, and the place was half full and they just SUCKED. I was a HUGE fan, and loved High Time. They were sloppy, Rob was FAT, and the only person who showed any energy at all was Wayne Kramer.

They managed to wake up during Sister Anne and Baby Wontcha.

It kills me to say anything negative about them, but they really, really did suck. This was the winter of 71/72, IIRC.

70. Zappa, Jazz From Hell tour 1987 or 88
Providence Civic Center

Smaller than usual crowd for a place that held an easy 15k... Maybe 7500 people. Our seats were gone because they had a mud bog race the next day so they moved us to the floor, about 150 yards from the stage. Not great but not bad.

He came out and played Stinkfoot. Half way through the show he stopped, knelt down to a guy in the front row who was holding up a coat and said "You expect me to stop the show so I can sign your fucking jacket?" Then went right back and finished the opening song.

The crowd roared.

He sent the rock band off then and replaced them with a 40 piece big band. The crowd began to grumble. He turned his back on everyone and started conducting.

It was great, real avant garde stuff. People weren't filtering out, they were leaving in droves, after 45 minutes. About twenty minutes later, when there were only, maybe, 500 of us left, he turned around and said, "well, now that we got rid of them..." and brought his rock band back out and did another entire set of classics. I mean a whole 90 minute set. It was amazing, like seeing him in a club. We all moved up and were right in front of the stage in this cavernous empty arena.

It was just awesome.

It was in an opera hall called, I think, Opera Hall, and I got a third row center seat outside the show for $8.

The Velvet Underground in Revere Beach, one of their very last shows in early 1970. I was WAY underage, but they let me in anyway.

The first Clash concert I saw, in DC on their first tour. I never saw them do a bad show, but that one was SAVAGE.

It's hard to whittle them down, I saw so many great ones. And still do. But those three stand out.

Northern Illinois University, Chick Evans Field House, the Caravanserai tour. You could get high from the second hand smoke alone.

LOOOONNNGGGG concert, must have gone 3 hours and the band was TIGHT! After two encores most were brain frazzled and grateful and getting ready to leave when the house lights dimmed once again, a single cool blue spot shines on the stage revealing Carlos, dressed all in white with a white guitar and he commences to play Samba Pa Ti....

People were in tears. best. concert. ever.

The next year Zappa came to campus on his Apostrophe tour and kicked total ass, another long concert, another tight band. There was some controversy because someone stole the tapes and he had wanted to use them for a live album he was putting together. This was great too, but Samba Pa Ti in a blue spot is unmatchable...

Do I win a prize?

Actually, I already did, 30 some years ago!

Edited to add we didn't have to rely on the second hand smoke.

97. Man, so many great ones I've seen
Pink Floyd, Soldier Field, Chicago, 1977, Animals Tour. 'nuff said.

Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, Chicago Stadium, 1978 or so. Great night of blues!

Ozzy w/Randy Rhodes, and Def Lepard, Alpine Valley, WI, 1980. Blizzard of Ozz and Def's first US tour.

U2, UIC Pavilion, Chicago, early 80's. Unforgetable Fire tour. Mesmerizing.

Scorpions, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden at various times in the early 80's in the Chicago area.

Ministry, McGreevey's Pub, Glenview Illinois, two shows, underage, and over 21. Had a different date for both...Al spit on me from the stage while singing, I was so close. and DAMN loud, too.

Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, Leo Kottke, Riverside Theatre in Milwaukee, 1987.

NIN, 1990, Cabaret Metro Chciago. Unbelieveable...

Soul Asylum, Shank Hall, Milwaukee, 1990. Drunk and Punk!

Nirvana, Cabaret Metro, Chicago, twice in 1990. Once before Nevermind came out, on a Sunday night, with about 30 people in the place, and the next time, after Nevermind came out, in a sold out room. Both great shows!

In the last ten years? Hmmm. Brian Setzer, Jet, a few others..

It was released as an album. (I don't know if it's still in print.) It featured Howard Kaylan and Mark Vollman of "The Turtles" singing "Happy Together." John Lennon and Yoko Ono also showed up to do a bit, but it didn't make it on to the album.

My opinion, Frank Zappa was a more interesting guitarist than any of the others in that time, including Hendrix.
