1. Trying to confuse
anti-spam software that uses Bayesian filtering (like Thunderbird or SpamAssassin).

2. Yeah, but really
Is it really that worth it? What kind of weirdo would bother with such nonsense?? (Insofar as clicking or whatever...)

5. enough for a spammer to make a profit
Most people would just discard this, but a few would act on it. And that's all a spammer needs.

3. Trying to get past hashing filters
with lists of random words.

I read a while back that the response rate for spam email was 1/40,000. I was amazed that it was that high. I have no idea who these 1/40,000 people are, but somebody needs to replace their computers with an Etch-A-Sketch or something.

9. Yeah..
It's crazy.. 1/40,000. But if you can send out 500 quadrillion messages, you stand to make a few bucks. A lot of spammers get paid on clicks, not on wether people actually BUY something at whatever site they click to.

Heyo

4. the spammer is trying to avoid filters
The deliberate misspellings are an attempt to avoid spam filters. And other people getting the spam probably have a different random set of words. This is to try to keep software from figuring out that the same message is being sent to lots of people.

So actually, the spammer is trying very hard. It worked on you, didn't it? You read the spam.

10. There was an article in like C-Net or ZD-Net or something about this.
Spam has degenerated into chaos to get around filters and is therefore losing it's ability to communicate much of anything.

11. That's essentially my point...
I mean, back when it said "Grow your penis 3 inches by this weekend!" or "Hot local girls want to meet you!!" or something, it'd pique my interest occassionally...now you have some random nonsense that doesn't even lend itself to the promise of free illicit sex or astoundingly large manhood...the magic is gone. :(

The newest version of SpamAssassin includes a new technology where the links in an e-mail are compared against a database of known spam links.

The main e-mail account for my server gets thousands of pieces of spam and viruses a day. Today's been a light day. SpamAssassin (not the newest version) has caught 3,486 and only let 93 through. A 97.3% success rate is pretty good in my book. I suspect once I get around to upgradeing SpamAssassin it should go up to around 99%.

13. Was this one straight text?
The latest spam fad is to give you all this weird-ass textual crap (to defeat spam filters that throw away graphics-only spams, and to provide a URL to people who have set their e-mail programs to strip off graphical attachments) then attach a graphic that contains the real message.
