Did anyone else here go to boarding school?
Edited on Thu Sep-23-04 10:35 PM by HEyHEY
I went for about two months because I got kicked out of summer school. I was sent to do my courses at a special school in Barrie, Ontario. The school was for kids with behaviour problems and learning disabilities. The kids there were insane, one of the nine-year-olds could actually put out a cigarette on his tongue.
They used to separate and beat up anyone they didn't like. I was lucky as I was one of the older ones, so they never screwed with me.
But there was a sick "don't question authority and conform" thing going on there. Odd because for all this "obey the rules" crap they sure went light on those who picked on others.
I remember being woken up early to do laps because two or three people made noise the night before - truly terrible.
However, I had the best grades in my life. I went from an E in alternate Math 10 to a B in regular math.
My parents could not afford to send me there all year though.
Anyone else ever go?

1. No...not me personally....but I have friends who did
some thought it was 'okay' (what do they have to compare it with after all?)....others, one woman in particular, thought it was the most ghastly, unnatural experience that she had ever been put through (btw, there wasn't any 'abuse' in the 'conventional sense of the word).

One of my friends has her sons at boarding school currently....they're doing 'pretty well'. These friends of mine had their children 'later in life' and, well, they just couldn't handle the boys. To be honest, they are probably better off where they are...but I certainly don't think it's anywhere near an 'ideal' situation for anyone concerned.

3. attended a year of Catholic boarding school in HS.
I graduated early, but no university would take me at 16 and let me live in the dorms, so I found a college that would... but it was far more like a high school.

Boarding schools have their place, and it would be nice if the kids who needed them could get to them (I was one; living at home was like living in hell) and the kids who are there only because mumsy and daddums don't give a damn about them had what they needed, too.

5. The only person I know who went to one is a DuPont.
and then there's Holden Caulfield. Neither seemed to have a very good experience.

Oh yeah, there's that kid I worked with that reminded me of Holden Caulfield. He talked exactly the same way and everything. He went to a boarding school. He was a weird kid, one of the last things he did when I knew him was he got drunk and after leaving the bar he ran into a telephone pole on his bicycle. Totally smashed his face up. He was always doing stuff like that.
