But the confident Perth girl who arrived at Heart's Escort Agency in April 2001 looking for a job was just 13 years old.

Agency owner Susanna Hutchinson, charged with employing a child as a prostitute, said she never doubted the girl was old enough to work as an escort.

"She was so confident and poised. I just didn't give it a thought, not a thought, that she was underage," Ms Hutchinson told the Perth District Court yesterday.

The 44-year-old told the court she was always vigilant about checking girls' identification. She always ensured the girls were drug-free and were not illegal immigrants.

When she started the agency in 2001 she contacted police in an effort to ensure she adhered to appropriate guidelines.

Ms Hutchinson said when she asked the 13-year-old for identification, she produced an 18-plus card with her personal details and promised to bring in a driver's licence on her next shift.
