BLUE LAKE -- An Orleans man was booked into the Humboldt County Jail Tuesday after police found him in a lane of State Highway 299 doing one-handed push-ups.
The Blue Lake Police Department said an officer was behind a big rig on Highway 299 around 9:30 p.m. when the truck suddenly swerved into the other lane.
Then the officer saw the man in the road and swerved to avoid hitting him.
As the officer pulled to the side of the road, the man, Damon Barry Colegrove, 38, got up and approached the patrol car saying that he knew he shouldn't have been there.
Colegrove was immediately handcuffed while the officer talked to him. Police said they detected a strong odor of alcohol on Colegrove.
According to the police, Colegrove said he was trying to get home from Arcata by hitchhiking and no one was stopping for him. He though that if he did one-handed push-ups in the road, someone would stop.
