Chimpanzee Has 50 Paintings On Exhibit

TOKYO -- An artist from a humble background now has some 50 paintings on exhibit at a Tokyo gallery. Asuka learned to paint only last year -- in a zoo. She's a chimpanzee.

The 3-year-old ape's painting career started when zoologists gave her a brush and a canvas as an experiment. Since then, she has produced about 90 works.

Asuka seems to favor yellow and red -- the colors of her favorite foods, bananas and apples.

Her minders said she appears to draw satisfaction from her work. They said "she looks calm and composed" when she finishes a work. Asuka isn't limiting herself to paint. The chimp is set to start working with pottery soon.
