My company had a little training exercise where they asked a room of about 20 people to count the 'F's in a short passage like this (written on index cards). There were 8, 4 of them in the word 'of'.

More than half of us (including me), insisted there were only 4 'F's. Only 2 or 3 came up with all 8 the first time.

The leader had us trade cards with others who came up with a different number. Most of us still came up with only 4 'F's.

Finally, she asked us to read the card sideways or backwards, and finally most of us found all 8. Still, there were a few holdouts, though. Eventually everyone came around, but only after explicitly pointing out the word 'of'.

It was an interesting exercise, definitely.
