So what should I do here?
I right now have a programming class in Java that I'm not exactly doing so hot in right now, because of all sorts of technical problems I had at the beginning. I'm thinking it might be best to just drop it and retake it again, I did this with a previous class and did very well the second time.

So I'm thinking now the best thing to do is drop the class, learn Java on my own, and then retake it with a better understanding. But should I drop it now? My university has a very late drop deadline, not until the second half of November actually. Should I try to improve first? Or maybe just stay in to learn about the laters parts and then drop it with a better understanding to get a head start on retaking it?

I'm lost now.

1. Will you not ...
loose money? If not, then drop it. You can learn Java on your own. There are tons of good books on it. :)

2. I say stick with it ...

... as its only (I'm assuming) one of your required electives. What degree are you going for?

Java: reducing all computers to the same level of mediocrity and bugginess.

5. CIS degree and its required
but like I said, I'm planning on retaking it later when I'd do better.

and I fully agree, this is by far the worst language I've ever dealt with.

7. I had a similar experience when taking x86 assembly ...
... at the beginning I wanted so dearly to drop out of it. But I stuck it out and came out with a B+. The class started out overfull with 40 students, but at the end it had only 8 students. But what I had to do was to spend some time on my home PC, late at night banging away on the keyboard. Only used some x86 assembly in a couple cases (C in-line assembly)in my career.

Java is hot right now in my group for its platform portability and doing multithreaded processing (in a database environment).

8. that's actually the reason why I hate it
it's so open ended that you have to configure it to get to work right, and that takes too damn long.

9. Start simple ...
... with a simple script and then add on elaboration.

Perhaps check out Sun's tutorials ...

3. Will it still appear on you transcript? How will it appear?
Make sure you do a bit of research first to see if it will stay on your transcript as a W grade. Grad schools can get a bit baulky if they see a lot of Ws on your transcript. Nobody else cares so if you aren't planning on applying to grad school I say go for it. Start fresh next semester.

6. It originally goes as a W but
if you retake the class the W is canceled out with the grade you get again.

I'm not planning on grad school, although I also doubt I'll be graduating in 4 years (this is the first semester of my junior year and I only have around 40% of the required credits)
