Quitting smoking day 2
I can't stop cramming my face. It just seems like I absolutely have to be doing something with my mouth. I could see how this could be advantageous if I had love in my life, but, alas, there's no one here to help me satisfy my oral fixation. And for those of you who have never experienced the joys of addiction, imagine this: every nerve in your body screaming, "GODDAMMIT! SMOKE A CIGARETTE FOR CHRIST'S SAKE OR WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!"

Somebody remind me why I'm trying to quit............

BTW - I have quit for 9 months. Just keep your mind busy with a hobby and keep asking us to remind you. Wanna see a few pics of blackened lung. That might help.

4. That's certainly a good reason
And I won't have to live out my last days strapped to an oxygen tank trying to breath air into my emphysemic lungs.

2. Because you only have one life to live
and you need to do it to respect yourself when you look in the mirror tommorrow. It is horrid and desperate, but you need to look in that mirror and make a choice.

Look in the mirror now.

Then chew up 2 lbs of licorice!

6. I think licorice is a good idea
Low in fat so it won't pack on the pounds. Nice chewy kinda shaped like a cigarette. This could work.

3. You will get over the physical addiction in a few days
that's the hardest part. Then you just have to fight it mentally. You are strong enough for that, no problem!

5. I need to quit myself, goodluck.
Quit for two months about 2 years ago. Would tell myself "I choose not to smoke" whenever I got cravings. Obviously, it only worked for so long. Going to try again soon though.

9. I keep telling myself I'm a non-smoker now
It may be keeping me from smoking, but it isn't helping much with the cravings. I don't feel like a non-smoker yet. I feel like a smoker who hasn't had a cigarette in two days.

7. I've never had a chemical addiction, but I've had my own control/lack
thereof...good luck. (And get some gum, toothpicks, glass-blowing lessons, or something...this too will pass...)

11. I've got lots of gum
It seems to help the best. I've been chewing sticks of gum at almost the rate that I smoked cigarettes.

8. Clean your house or apartment .
Organize your closets, dressers, bookcases whtever!

Keep busy and you won't think (much) about it. Cut up some celery stick and carrot sticks. HOld them between your lips or teeth as you worked. Instead of a drag - take a bit. Good Luck to you. I know this is hard.

10. How about trying "the patch?" . . .
It helps the physical addiction. As for the oral gratification? That continues for quite some time . . . I speak from experience.

All of this beats dying early!

All of it. Stick to it. And C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S - one day at a time.
. . . . . . . . . .

13. I've tried nicotine gum
and it didn't really help me any. When it was time to come off the gum I went back on the cigarettes. I think the patch works similarly to the gum and I think that I'd be better off trying to break this hold that nicotine has over me from the get-go. If this doesn't work I may go to the doctor and get a prescription for Zyban (I think that's what it's called.)

12. You Can do it!!!
yes you can , you CAN do it. You want to. You have to. You need to.

think of the money you'll save, not only in not buying smokes, but in the prescription drugs you won't need to keep you healthy BECAUSE you quit smoking and are in good health!!!

ok so it's late and that's my best offering.

YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!

Best of luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

16. That's a very good reason
I spent $30 a week on cigarettes just to do something that would make my health deteriorate faster. I think the scariest part for me is not being able to breath good. I've recently noticed that I don't have the lung capacity that I used to. That's scary.

I have 2 relatives who did - and one was on Oxygen for 6 months. The human body has amazing regenerative powers.

20. Good reasons
Another good reason is that I can sing again without coughing and gagging. I'm already starting to notice this. I do a lot of driving for my job and a nice way to pass the time is to turn on the radio and sing along. Well, for a while now I haven't been able to sing along for very long before I start coughing and gagging. It was a real bummer and directly due to me smoking. I noticed tonight that I can almost sing a whole song now without hacking a lung up.

It was really bad before I quit. Within a month I had women telling me I had a sexy voice.
Add THAT one to your list!

to 're-'elect the. worst. president. ever.

On Edit: i must be tired; "re-elect"!?! sheesh! I NEVER say that. reINSTALL

ps buy some excellent sweet carrots and peel a lot of them. store some peeled ones so you can just reach in and grab a few. prepare other healthy snacks to grab. the prep will keep you busy. the readiness of healthy snacks will make it easier to grab (instead of cake or chips). thoroughly chewing the vegie and fruit snacks will be a pale, but better-than-nothing substitute for the oral craving.

18. I quit smoking 7 years ago
I quit smoking the day before my XX'th birthday 7 years ago. I was painfully thin all of my life and after quitting smoking put on what at first might seem like a lot of weight (food tastes sooooo good now!). But its actually just about right for my age and height. Id feel better about myself if I lost 10 or 15 lbs but Id feel much WORSE about myself if I still smoked. It was the best decision I ever made in my life. Oh, I did it cold turkey and I have not backslid even a single time. It was undoubtedly the hardest and most worthwhile decision I have ever made.

22. Congratulations!
Yeah, the problem with me putting on weight is that I'm already about 80 lbs. overweight. I really need to start eating healthy and exercising along with quitting smoking. But I guess I'll take it one bad habit at a time.

And continued good luck! I'll leave it at that. The less those of us who've been addicted talk about smoking, the better.

:D

But really, licorice and gum can help, but when my old girlfriend quit she developed a real hatred for the taste of gum when it lost its flavor.

31. here's quit tip
You're NOT "quitting".

You've quit. You're done. You're a non-smoker.

Go hang out with some non-smokers at the next break at work, and ask them what they do with all that spare time, etc.

But quitting is a process that you'll fail. You've already quit. Don't drag it out any longer. Just admit it.

:D
