How To Kill Yellow-Jacket Wasps

1) Obtain a pressure sprayer.
2) Buy Ortho liquid concentrate Ortho Malathion-Plus insect poison
3) Mix concentrate with water as per instruction (4 oz to one gallon)
4) Add an extra ounce of poison (for good measure and for revenge).
5) Attach plunger (pump) device to pressure sprayer.
6) Pressurize sprayer.
7) Adjust nozzle to a superfine mist.
8) Approach underground wasp nest opening slowly during cooler morning hours.
9) Lightly mist the area to "daze" and scatter any wasps that are lurking in the ground.
10) Adjust nozzle to shoot a liquid "stream"
11) Stand back as far as possible and aim stream directly into nest opening.
12) Completely fill nest with poison.
13) Keep spraying even after nest is full and overflowing.
14) Re-adjust nozzle to mist mode and while still at a safe distance... spray the dazed wasps that have exited the nest and are trying to figure out what's going on.
15) Laugh derisively and mumble "take THAT you lousy bastards".
16) Go inside and bathe thoroughly to remove poison from skin.
17) Wait two hours and inspect devastation and abandoned nest.
18) Laugh derisively again.

WARNING!!! DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF. DANGER!!! SUCH THINGS SHOULD BE LEFT TO PROFESSIONALS WHO HAVE THE PROPER EQUIPMENT.

5. Wow... You Get The Most-Stings-Award
I discovered our underground nest while mowing as well. Except I was on a riding mower so I was fortunately not standing directly OVER the opening immediately after the blades had pissed off all the bastards.

I was stung only six times... and that was pretty painful. I'd probably pass out from 200 of them. Sorry to hear about your horrible experience.

17. Thanks...
I was using a push mower, but I had stopped actually and walked over to the back door of the house where I was mowing... (I mowed under contract for a housing development with empty houses ever so often)... and wa reading a notice on the door when I must have stepped on their nest... next thing I knew, I was face down on the ground screaming bloody murder... my mother had come by with a sandwich and drink or I would have been alone. She managed to calm both of us down and got me to the hospital. I will never forget it... mercy!

9. I Had Considered Putting A Cinder-Block Over The Opening
but I realized that if they could dig the first hole in the first place, they could dig an alternate entry if they really wanted to. And... they might have had a secret "back door" emergency exit/entrance. You know how sneaky they can be.

3. Try the farm boy method...
...Just slosh a gallon or so of gasoline (regular will do) into the nest and move away briskly. No smoking.

6. That was suggested more than once... and I must admit...
the thought of seeing those buggers fly out of the hole and catching fire and falling to the ground like WWII enemy war planes was tempting.

But... I didn't want to ruin my lawn either.

13. That was my dad's favorite way to kill them
then my husband tried it and was shocked to see how well it worked but I could have killed him because it is terribly dangerous to do...
It did kill the little bastards...

7. WTG
sounds like you got those nasty little bastards. Are your stings doing OK? Damn, I just hate to poison anything, especially in my pasture but... those things hurt and if you tend to be allergic, well there you go. Get em.

12. you should find out if anyone in the area collects the wasps
to make anti venom. there's a guy in oregon who does it.

guy comes out and vacuums the suckers up.

unless they are too close to a door, I just leave them alone until the nest is really big, since they eat other insects, then the guy gets lots of them for making the anti-venom. I just mark the nest for later in the season.

One time I had four nests to give to the guy.

(I'll have to look up the name for anyone interesting in Oregon. He might know of other people to call around the country.

18. You've never run into a yellow jacket nest have you?
Its "him" and his fifty brothers and their cousins, mad as hell 'cuz you voted for bush.

The sting is listed as a seven on the safford-simpson sadism scale.

bastards been dive-bombing me during hurricane clean-ups.

16. An easier method...
1) Go to the hardware store and buy a bag of Sevin powder.

2) Wait until dusk when the hornets are all back in the nest.

3) Liberally sprinkle/pour the Sevin in and around the hole.

Give it a day or two...they'll all be dead. They track the Sevin into the nest with their little hornet feet, so there's no need to try to force the stuff down the hole.

19. Genuine Sevin Is A Controlled Substance, Isn't It?
I thought it was only available to commercial nurseries, and only by permit, and only under controlled application conditions.

But I could be wrong.

22. I've never been stung by any sort of bee, wasp, or hornet.
Never been stung, and I'm an avid hiker. We have an understanding. I respect them, they respect me.

And I'll kill those little fuckers.
