Edited on Sat Sep-25-04 08:51 PM by Minstrel Boy
For me, hands down, it's Mothman.

1. I like the Kraken
There may really be very big giant squids which inspired the kraken. I just think that it might be cool that there is a huge sea invertabrate that can take down ships. Actually kind of scary, but interesting.

2. But Mothman is too weird to be cryptozoology!!
Mothman is like space aliens or Spring-heeled Jack -- a creature of legend and the supernatural.

If you're going to do cryptozoology, you should at least try to keep to things that might conceivably be real -- like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster or sea serpents or the mokele-mbembe or giant bats.

I'm kind of partial to giant bats, myself.

5. Ah, I see what you mean.
Parazoology, perhaps?

I wonder if the "Owlman of Mawnan" is a distant relation:

4. The Fiscal Conservative
Fiscal Conservatives were once rumored to exist in large numbers within the United States, but their numbers began to rapidly dwindle in the 60's to the point where they are now in danger of extinction. Their crash in population numbers is commonly held to be due to parasitism from the Fanatic Conservative, which began in earnest in 1963 under the direction of Barry Goldwater. Their numbers continued to decline throughout the 60's and 70's until a movement to cannibalize the Fiscal Conservative began under Ronald Reagan. Today the fiscal conservative is very rare, but recent censuses indicate they may be increasing in numbers again.

6. the lost tribe of Neanderthals living in remote Russia today
I read this a few years back that supposedly someone had discovered, in an extremely remote area of Russia, a shy tribe of people who fit the description of neanderthal man.

It was a serious news report and I always wondered if anybody followed up on it.

Even today, sightings of these creatures are rather common; and several scientists have seen them. One incident occurred in 1917, when the Reds were pursuing White Army forces through the Pamirs. The troops of Major General Mikail Stephanovitch Topilsky shot an Almas as he was emerging from a cave.

"The eyes were dark and the teeth were large and even and shaped like human teeth. The forehead was slanting and the eyebrows were very powerful. The protruding jawbones made the face resemble the Mongol type of face. The nose was very flat ...the lower jaws were very massive"

1941 — A Russian unit fighting the Germans in the Caucasus near Buinakst is asked by some partisans to look at an unusual prisoner. According to the unit's commander, Lt. Col. Vargen Karapetyan, the captive 'man' was naked, hairy, and covered with lice; he obviously didn't understand speech and appeared to be dim-witted, blinking often; he was evidently afraid, but made no attempt to defend himself when Karapetyan pulled hairs from his body. He was kept in a barn, because, as the partisans explained, in a heated room he stank and dripped sweat. Not wanting to get involved, Karapetyan told the partisans to do what they wanted with the prisoner. A few days later he heard that the prisoner had escaped, but according to a later report made by the Ministry of the Interior in Daghestan, the 'wild man' had been executed as a deserter after being court-martialed.

11. Interesting
I'm not sure about the reliability of this site though, based on other articles. For example, the existence of the ether, in which all astronomical bodies are supposed to be suspended, was disproved a long time ago.

14. Has anyone heard of Sparks the dog?
It's a "ghost" dog, walks on its hind legs, bizarre as it sounds, has been reported to wear clothes sometimes. It has long sharp teeth and seems to smile in a demonic "I know what you're thinking" way. I don't know if it's my fav, but it sure is scary.

17. Cadborosaurus!
"Caddy" (and its mainland cousin Ogopogo) are BC legend. I even like them better than Bigfoot, Kokanee commercials notwithstanding. The thought of a large unknown sea creature living just a few miles from me ...
