Fat cat Mickey is shedding kilos

By EVELYN YAMINE

September 27, 2004

HE might not look any slimmer but Micky the "fat cat" has shed almost 2kg in just three weeks – and he is determined to even lose more.

The ginger domestic cat was surrendered to the RSPCA earlier this month weighing 13kg.

He was immediately put on a strict diet and has become the first in-house cat to join the RSPCA Slimmer's Club.

The program was set up for cat owners who want to help their furry friends lose weight.

Micky has been getting the exclusive treatment at the Yagoona animal
shelter.

2. Well... here's my Sammy
And he's about 13 kilos too! Or was when this photo was taken. He's on a diet and has lost maybe a couple of pounds.

4. Did your vet's head explode the first time
they put Sammy on the scales? I had one make it up to just shy of 18 pounds (what, that's something like 8 kilos, right?), and one of the vets at the clinic where we take the cats had a fit. Had another one who was about 17. Got 'em both down around 14 pounds, now.

I got the whole laundry list of things weight can cause them to develop when they get older -- diabetes, heart trouble, arthritis. She gave me more grief about the cats' weight than any human doctor ever gave me about anything I was doing wrong for my own health.

The biggest problem is, we have four cats -- two of whom can free-feed without getting too fat, two of whom turn into furry basketballs if the food is available all the time. It's a circus feeding them, now. While I was typing this, one of the 'little cats' came up and tapped me on the shoulder. She's now eating. I keep a closed container of kibble on my desk for the free-feeders, they've trained me to give it to them when they ask for it.

5. I had a 25 pounder who turned into a diabetic at the age of 3

about a month ater i got him. The expenses for the next 10 years for him were MIGHTY!. I tried to keep him on a diet, but people passing by would feed him and there were outdoor feeders i am sure he frequented. Mr Big never met a bowl of cat food he didn't absolutely love! He was a fab cat, but I'm sure he would have made it longer than 13, if he had not been fat.
