3. Um...music's most hated man is Lars Ulrich...
that said, I hate Sting for being such a pretentious wanker while making bad music. If he made GOOD music, one could forgive him for being a pretentious wanker; as it is, it's kind of ridiculous.

4. "Roxanne" makes my skin crawl
Somehow, the music industry considers that one of the top 20 songs of all time. It's awful (sorry to Roxanne fans, but I'm conducted scientific tests on this one, and you're wrong and I'm right).

8. Popularity is no guarantee of quality...
frequently quite the opposite. Just look at the top 20 albums chart or the NYT bestseller list, for God's sake.

27. By the popularity standard. . .
. . .Britney, Christina, and the never-to-be-sufficiently-damned BACKSTREET BOYS are classical music.

Next thing you know, someone will tell me that Chimpy is a GOOD President. . . . (excuse me while I projectile-vomit. . .)

that and the fact that he's so full of himself, he leaks out his own ears.

11. It's the betrayal, I guess.
I liked The Police once't upon a time. Never loved them, but thought they were pretty solid. The bits and pieces I've heard from Sting over the years, including the full horrible song I was forced to listen to while waiting for my car insurance to be processed or something, just baffles me completely. How trite, bland, gutless, boring, false, vanilla, synthetic and horrible does a song have to be before he stops and says to himself "Wait a minute - this song I've just recorded is absolute crap?"

Sting seems to have planned his career based on Rod's.

23. Nobody can compete with Rod in the "betrayal" sweepstakes.
To go from "Borstal Boys" and "You Wear it Well" to "Passion" and "Forever Young" is a rather procipitous drop.

Songs meander and noodle along aimlessly.
too self-absorbed and self-important
and just generally annoys the hell out of me.

29. I agree with you...
I have no idea why everybody's always got to have someone to hate.

I actually do like his music. In fact, if I'm in the mood for pop, I like pretty much any music as a long as it is played well, has a nice hook and it's in a register that I can sing along with. Sure, I'd prefer Talking Heads or some such when it comes to 80's/90's pop, but Sting's fine by me.

I really couldn't care less whether or not an artist is pretentious, a drug addict or just a plain asshole, if I dig the music he/she produces, what the hell... I don't have to deal with them personally. I can even tolerate Justin Timberlake or Britney Spears (well, maybe not Britney Spears... no... definately not Britney Spears.), if I'm in the mood for it.

Thing is, I'm usually in the mood for something along the lines of Praxis, Sun Ra, Ralph Stanley, James Brown, Jon Hassell or a good ol' Saami yoik, so I don't listen to a whole lot of Sting.

20. Here's the list of reasons:
1. Turning rock music into Weather Channel lite-jazz.
2. Refusing to work with Stewart Copleand again. Some people don't know when they're being spoiled.
3. "....Nothing Like the Sun" could bore a tree sloth to death.
4. Acting like the biggest twat you could imagine. "Rock and the Pop Narcotic" has a great picture of Sting posed next to a Kayapo Indian Chief in the Amazon Rain forest, looking insufferable and tony. The caption reads, "Shouldering the White Pop Star's Burden." I think that sums it up nicely.
5. Convincing people that boring-ass fusion jazz played by boring-ass fusion musos is rock and roll.
6. Not knowing when the hell to get off the stage. (1984 would have been a nice time to give up music...what, do you NEED that extra 10 million bucks, dude? Just retire already!)
7. Dueting with Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart on a ballad for the "Three Muskateers" remake soundtrack album during the height of Nirvana's popularity. That sucks in about 320 different ways.
8. He just sucks. If you don't know why, you're not paying attention.
9. His vaunted "songwriting" ability relies to a great degree on the ability of his session hacks. The songs themselves are flimsy and amelodic, but once he gets Vinnie Colaiuta to tap out a few beats, all of a sudden, it's pop magic. Fuck him.

26. My Life With Sting aka When Bobby Met Gordon...
(All years/times are approximates at best!)

1981: Matt Cool and I watch the Material World video and rush out to cut up army fatigue pants to wear. The summer is spent making out with girls to Zenyatta...
1983: I get a month-early sneak listen of Syncronicity and tell my jealous friends it is a great but different Police CD.
1984: Andy Summers says, with a detectable sigh, that Sting "just can't seem to keep that shirt on" on Letterman.
1985: RIP, the Police. Semi-gay response to the "Fortress" video, despite midget. Terrible film with sequence in which he recalls hearing an orderly whistling "Roxanne" in the delivery room as his first child is born..."and I wept." WTF?!?
1986: "Don't Stand So Close to Me" remade! Awesome! Reunion?
1987: My mom dies, and the "Nothing Like the Sun" CD gets me thru it. That CD is all about grieving your parent.
1988: DerStingle cuts up with Gabriel and Springsteen on Amnesty tour. Delivers a uniquely weird version of "The River."
1990: Soul Cages. Hmm, neat that the last song echoes the first, but, um, where's the rest of me? I hock it at the local record barn. A first of us.
1991-present: "Desert Rose" was a pretty single but doesn't buy you a popsicle in Hell for "Brand New Day," the 3 Muskyteers song, and that reverse mohawk 'do in that cowboy video.

Meanwhile, one of the three best drummers in rock history subsists of soundtrack scoring. Fuck you, Gordon.
