I have a CD on with the volume up to mask the deafening rain: Moussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain. Like I said, real loud.

The generator is fueled and the flashlights and candles are handy. I cooked two days of good chow. The dogs are more used to being in by now than I am. But they go out in the rain.

I am in the worst place possible tonight. The late Jeane will pass right over or slightly to the west. The heavy rain and near-hurricane force winds are forecast for my little neck-of-the-woods.

Two things are at work. 1: The mountains (especially the south mountains in NC, where I am located) lift the tropical flow and wring more rain out of it. 2: Winds coming upslope and between mountain peaks are accelerated (venturi effect).

The lights are blinking, but I have a generator. I might be around for a while. Once I lose DSL, I am down. Ironically, I have lost dial-tone twice tonight, but not DSL!

Mac

3. Hang in there
We'll be getting the remnants tomorrow here in NC. We've all had enough of this hurricane season in the southeast.

4. Take care!
You poor folks in the eastern US have certainly had a rough couple of months. Hopefully this is the last of the terrible weather for a long time!

5. too bad about the orographic thing
That can make a big difference locally, for rainfall patterns. I hope you aren't in a heavily developed watershed (or one that doesn't have much in the way of soils or wetlands) -- that can really increase the risk of flash flooding!

Good luck, Mac. Love to the dogs -- hope they don't get too worried by the noises.

10. Good luck.
I waited out the remnants of Frances in a tent in the Smokies and we were fine. I'm sure that you'll be fine, too. (Good choice of music, btw.) You sound like you know what you're doing, but I'll say it anyway: Be careful.

12. Thanks, the power went out. I went down and fired up the generator.
The computer and 2-meter ham are up and running.

13. I don't know where you are
but here in Charleston SC, we just lost the power but it came back on quickly. Tornado warnings all over the place and the weather radio we have is just a beeping away. I hate nights like this.

15. OK, I'm on generator power. Finally.
There were a couple of glitches. The generator is hard-wired into the house electrical system. It runs two freezers, a re-fridge, a well pump, a few light circuits and a few warning (smoke/fire/CO/) circuits. It is manual-start and manual-disconnect. Other-wise it is manual on-line and automatic off line. It is gasoline powered, which I hate. I'll convert it soon to propane. Or trade it in on a propane model.

14. We're looking forward to some of that moving in overnight
Here in north-central NC, we've gotten our first few bands of rain this evening, and we're supposed to get the 35-40 MPH winds and 2-4" of rain tomorrow, along with the tornado watches and warnings and such.

Have fun storming the castle!
