On kids and daycare
Ever thought your SO was going to pick up the kid from daycare, forgot that he/she had asked you at the last minute because plans had changed? Both arrive home, child still at daycare? Ever taken care of somebody else's kids at the last minute, got side tracked and forgot to pick their child up from school because it isn't in your regular routine? I've done each of these. Once each. 28 years of raising kids, two times I forgot kids.

What if it had been a baby in the back carseat? I got damned lucky. Others don't.

2. but for the grace of entropy there go I.
I was a forgotten baby... along with the keys. (Sleep deprived mom....) Fortunately, it was a cool, rainy April day.

I don't have kids. But I've forgotten all sorts of other things that could have been as critical because they weren't routine. Doctor's appointments, cats at the vet, things like that.

People who "never forget" are either lying or have been lucky. Either way, it's unattractive smugness.

Humans are creatures of routine. We do get distracted. Fortunately, it's rare that it's a life threatening thing.

3. I've Never Left My Groceries In The Car
Can't imagine how one could leave their helpless child strapped in a car ... unless they were tired of being a parent, that is. A few of these cases seem to be honest fatigue, but the vast majority seem to be, well, something else. That something else would be murder.

4. Really, not even a gallon of milk?
Hell I've forgotten to pick up a gallon of milk off the counter after I paid for it. I've left groceries in the car on several occasions. Brought one bag in, got a phone call, forgot to go out and get the potatoes, they freeze overnight. You people are either young or sanctimonious, not sure which. Used to be the story was people who left the car seat on the roof. I don't know how the media story has changed to hot cars and kids, but shit really does just happen sometimes.

5. No, And Especially Never Forgotten A Helpless Child
You want to excuse murderers, you go right ahead. I guess some of us are just more concerned about the welfare of helpless children than others. If you want to call that sanctimonious, well, you go right on ahead and do it and I won't mind a bit - better to be called a name than excuse babies baking to death in agony in backseats because mommy got a phone call.

How the media story "changed"? Ask the people at kidsandcars.org. Yes, "shit" does happen, but most people don't think leaving a young child to die a horrible death is just "one of those things."
