Do I need a permit to put flyers on cars?
I, want to put Anti-Bush flyers on cars parked at subway parking lots.

I have been passing them out for months (here and there) but now I'm going hardcore with flyer circulation. I live in the Bay area.

1. Not if you don't get caught
Probably depends on where you live. They might have an ordinance against. it.

2. My problem with fliers on cars
People pull them off and toss them on the ground. Litter is a major pet peeve of mine.

3. Just be sure
that if you print more than 500, you have to have contact info on them for your organization or you are in violation of election laws.

4. I really, really hate it when I get a flyer on my car.
If I get in my car, put my seatbelt on and look up to see a flyer, I get really annoyed and I consider myself to be a relatively patient person. I put them in the nearest trash can without ever looking at them. Your heart is in the right place and I admire your ambition, but please rethink this idea.

10. NOT IN MAILBOXES
Federal crime.

I'm not sure about putting them under the little flag in the side. I'm also not sure about putting them in newspaper tubes.

12. Me, too.
A long time ago, I boycotted anyone who put a flyer on my car.

6. What about on lightposts in parking lots?
Not on windshields. Gak, that ticks me off to no end!

Hmmm, lightposts, maybe I'll do that one!

8. please DO NOT rethink this idea
Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 12:22 PM by luvamericahatebush
it's a good idea and may make some people think. I admire what you are doing. If we are going to get around the media bias, we must take matters into our own hands.

Jeez... sometimes I wonder if some people on this board really want to win, and if they really understand that the media is our #1 enemy.

edited to add - I always look at what is on my windshield, if only to get the money saving coupons put on by the small businesses (who have no other option for advertising, sort of like us). The majority will discard them, but if you can get a small % to think, you have done a great job. Its called grassroots action. again, thanks for doing this....

14. is it worth getting a small majority in relation to the people
who will get pissed off about it? Perhaps a poll would be the way to go with this question. Of course, I want Kerry to win. I'm out registering people and doing everything I can just like veryone else on these boards. I just think standing in a public place and handing the flyers to people in person with a short explanation is the better way to go.

11. call your county and ask
It is going to depend on where you are putting out the flyers.

If you cannot get permission to put them on cars, I would put them on door handles. DON'T put them in mail boxes. You can't put flyers without paid postage on it in U.S. mail boxes, it's a violation of federal law. Reason -- bad people would then have an excuse to all the time be playing in your mail box. So it is a blanket law that nothing goes into the mail box that is not legitimate mail with paid postage. But there's nothing wrong with putting them in the door like the pizza guys and lawn-cutters do.

Don't pay attention to negativity. We all think we hate flyers, but the truth is...if the flyer is compelling enough, I will look at it. Make it funny or shocking to draw attention. If you were selling something, I'd say put a coupon on it. But otherwise just make it attention-getting. I'm not sure what "Subway" you are speaking of, but if it's the sandwich store, and you manage it, I bet a couple of flyers -- one with a coupon on it, one with your campaign ad -- would get a few eyeballs.

Good Luck.

15. I agree with everything except:

One could seriously put their job in jeopardy with the owner/corporation by attaching campaign materials to store discounts. I may have misunderstood and you might have meant two seperate flyers. If so, sorry about that.

19. cool.
Go for it and don't get discouraged. Just a quick call to the county or city and find out if it's okay.

Keep up the great work! Even if you have to continue handing them out in person, you are still doing your part. I think it's great!

16. Hand them out
The ordinance in my city is against leaving them on windshields, doorknobs, etc.

I suggest that you stand by the subway and hand them to people. You might be surprised at how many people stop to talk to you about it.

It's quite encouraging. :)
