Yeah, even JPGs can carry viruses now. And there are exploits in the wild too.

I predict an exploit will be released soon.

3. Does not affect Mozilla and Firefox
so people running those should be safe while browsing. Mozilla and Firefox do not use Microsoft's library for drawing JPEGs.

What I don't understand is... is a patch needed for every piece of software you run? That seems to be the case from the Microsoft technet page where they have patches for everything from Office to the Platform SDK. Shouldn't updating the GDI library in Windows fix this problem for all software using it?

4. I suspect those other programs (Office, Project, Visio, Visual Studio etc)
...update GDI32.DLL from their own CDs when they install.

So if you patch yourself and then purchase, say, Visual Studio, you can still get 0wn3d.

8. Any system
Can be compromised given time and knowledge. This includes real unix like AIX, Mainframe OSs MVS and Z/OS, and cisco equipment. Breaking Unix by gaining root is in some ways easier than breaking file permissions on windows. Depending on the SA on either system. Unix systems tend to be used in systems that are "secure" and breaking them is usually done for some reason other than to be annoying.

Linux is no different:
http://www.phreak.org/archives/exploits/unix/linux-exploits/
http://www.apocalypseonline.com/security/exploits/exp_index.asp

Use of the above on any computer other than yours will probably land you in jail or at least seeking work so..

I'm no Microsoft fan but the reality is that any operating system or kernel is subject to compromise through various means.
