1. I agree with those picks....

2. Are we gonna give...
..Bobby Cox a manager of the year award? No matter what one thinks of the Braves, it's hard to deny he deserves it this year.

3. Lew Ford can't be ROY
He was up last season for more than 75 days.

Good picks except I would give National CY to Clemens, and American MVP to Mariano Rivera (despite my loathing for the Yankees)

7. He's still a rookie for ROY purposes
The eligibility requirements are, prior to the season under consideration you must have:

Fewer than 130 at bats and 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues,

OR

Fewer than 45 days on the roster of Major League clubs

Ford only had 73 AB in 2003.

4. MOY - Gotta be LaRussa.
ROY - Bay
CY - Zambrano
MVP - Bonds

(Note: I only offer my opinion as it concerns the National League since I do not consider the game that the AL plays to 'really' be baseball. I hate the DH.)

11. Santana has better numbers
Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 04:27 PM by tcfrogs
look beyond the W/L record

W-L E.RA IP H HR BB K WHIP OAVG
Schilling 21-6 3.26 226.2 206 23 35 203 1.06 .239
Santana 20-6 2.62 223.0 153 24 53 260 0.92 .193

A little better control from Curt, overall better #'s for Santana.

13. I'm a Sox fan, and even I concede the Cy to Santana.
He has been lights-out since the All-Star break.

I do NOT want to face him in the ALDS.

8. AL MVP: Sheffield over Ramirez? You must be wikked retahded!
:-)

Ramirez: more HRs, more RBIs, higher AVG, higher OBP, higher SLG.

And, I don't want to hear that "Manny was protected in the batting order by Ortiz" crap, either. Sheffield was surrounded by a $190 million payroll; he had plenty of help.

Don't get me wrong: Sheffield's numbers are plenty good, but they don't hold a candle to Ramirez.

And that's my unbiased opinion. :-)

9. Ok I'll give you this
Sheffield's team is in first place in the AL East.

Manny's team is in second place in the AL East.

The award is Most Valuable Player, not Offensive Player of the Year.

10. Which team would suffer more without the player in question
would the yankees have the record they have without sheffield? probably pretty close and his production is not that much greater than the various other people Steinbrenner could have rented. The red sox would be on the outside looking into the playoffs without ramirez.

16. The Yankees
It's difficult to make an argument that Manny has been that much more valuable to the Sox than David Ortiz.

Sheffield on the other hand has been hands down the most valuable every day player for the Yankees.

19. Disagree
I've watched pretty much every Yankee game this year, and the Yanks would have been completely screwed without Sheffield. He and Jeter have offensively carried the team on their backs this year.

12. Since when does a second-place finish disqualify an MVP candidate?
Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 04:27 PM by MallRat
The only criteria is that the candidate should come from a contender... and even that rule is broken sometimes (see Rodriguez, Alex: 2003).

On a team which has had a revolving door on the offensive side of the ball due to injuries, Manny carried Boston for weeks at a time. Nomar was useless with bad leg, Nixon didn't return in earnest until September, and Mueller (reigning batting champion) missed two months with a bad knee.

All of the Yankees injury issues came on the pitching side. Sheffield had Jeter, A-Rod, and Matsui along with him at the top of the lineup for the entire season. That's a lot of support.

17. When the two candidates play in the same division
Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 04:45 PM by Sandpiper
It's hard to buy into the idea that guy on the second place team should be the MVP, barring overwhelmingly superior numbers on his part (i.e. Bonds/Beltre).

Manny's had David Ortiz batting behind him all season long, so that sort of dents the argument about protection in the line up.

Not to mention, Sheffield's offensive production has been more vital to the Yankees down the stretch, considering that they have to score a lot of runs to win, having a staff ERA of 5.01 since the all star break.
