Georgia State University Student Peace Activist Killed by Gator in Florida
Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 11:18 PM by NEOBuckeye
I read news like this all the time. One might think I'd be desensitized to it all, but for some reason, this one has stuck with me. Maybe because she was so young and full of promise and hope...

A student peace activist who expressed her daring through avant-garde poetry drowned in a southwest Florida lake Sunday after an alligator bit off her arm.

Michelle Reeves, 20, of Roswell apparently had gone for a pre-dawn swim at her grandparents' retirement home in Fort Myers. Reeves was last seen about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Her father, James Reeves, discovered her body face down after noticing her nightgown on the ground near the waterfront about 10 a.m.

--- snip ---

She had protested the Iraq war during the Republican National Convention in New York and had demonstrated in Washington, said fellow poet Zac Denton.

"She was extremely intelligent and loving and socially conscious," Denton said. "I could see that she was developing her own poetic style and voice."

3. Her grandparents had actually warned her of gators in the lake
But it apparently didn't dampen her eagerness to go skinny-dipping there. Maybe she didn't take them seriously, or thought she would be able to escape if a gator got too close. Like Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin or something. But gators are stealth operators in water. The attack likely happened very quickly, and left her completely overwhelmed, stunned and helpless. A tragic and untimely fate.
