Who knows about DVD disc compatibility?
I believe my DVD burner can burn up to 4X discs and has done okay with a software movie program that only goes up to 2X. The DVD has even managed to burn on a 1X disc. But, I came across a great DVD sale and only found out when the burning failed that the discs are 8X.

I've already reached the conclusion that I can't use discs more than 4X -- unless there's some compatibility adjustment that I can make through the software. For the tech gurus out there, how far am I from the mark?

1. Sounds about right
When a DVD or CD writer advertises a top speed, it means it will reliably write the disk at the next-lowest speed.

I've never found that to be wrong.

Fact is, you get top "burning" speed only with a well-built, fully tweaked system. Which is a nice thought, but not a practical real-life experience.

This is even true for the MacOS and Linux.
