1. Hmm...two crazy diamonds
I'm going with Syd. He doesn't get enough attention.

2. Barrett, for several reasons:
1. He's the bigger kook.
2. He was the more innovative musician of the two.
3. He gets less recognition from music fans.
4. His post-nervous breakdown hairdo birthed the punk look.

3. The music is completely different
And Syd was at it for a very short time.

4. Brian Wilson is one of the great genius' in music
Barrett never really had the chance to realize his full potential. And Waters probably had more influence to Barrett's work than he is given credit for.

5. Seeing Brian Wilson TOMORROW NIGHT
...at the North American premiere of "SMILE" in Minneapolis! I haven't heard the CD yet, but I'm picking it up tonight after work. If it's half as good as the reviews, it will be stupendous.

Although I like Syd Barrett, Brian Wilson is truly amazing. Syd is a songwriter, while Brian is a composer who ranks up there with the greats of the 20th century. The fact that he's returned to the world of the living with such vitality is unbelievable.

I last saw Brian in 1999 on his "comeback" tour (missed the Pet Sounds tour, unfortunately). I'll be quite happy if he's almost as good as he was on that tour.

6. Hard choice
I'm going with Syd based on potential, for that's all we really have to go on with him. "Piper" was all Syd. No telling what he could have come up with to follow up.

7. I have to go with Brian Wilson on this one
I was a huge Syd fan back in the late 70s/early 80s, but I was also in to a lot of the chemicals that Syd used to boost his imagination. He had some great ideas, but he was only around for a short period and really only stuck to a certain type of music for that period. He influenced a lot of my early music and people have commented on that influence while listening to some of my old recordings.
I was never a Beach Boys fan until about 5 years ago when I started listening to more than just the hits. Brian's genius blows me away. He did things in the studio that weren't thought of at the time and his harmonies are untouchable in my opinion.
Both made their marks, but Brian Wilson left more to study and learn from. Syd had to burn himself out too fast, unfortunate as that is.
