Anyone hear Randi Rhodes with Patti Smith?
I love Patti Smith (first date with my SO at a wonderful show) but Randi was dead on. She wasn't going to let Ralph defense go by. It was interesting, especially since Randi obviously loves Patti Smith. It must have been awkward to get in an argument with someone you respect that much...

4. Patti had a right to speak her mind
but she didn't want to defend her points. She should apologize to Randi IMO. That entire segment was a downer, but at least Randi did a good job keeping her cool.

7. She Shouldn't Have to Defend
Edited on Wed Sep-29-04 06:13 PM by Crisco
Unless she agreed beforehand to speak in debate format. Or should people who don't wish to take part in competitive dialog not be allowed to have opinions?

10. Absolutely Not
It takes two willing parties to engage in a debate. A debate is a contest in which there is a winner and a loser. He (or she) who best defends and advances their opinion for the judges wins. One has a choice whether or not to play.

If Patti agreed to a debate before they went on air, then yes, she should have been up for defending her opinion, but if she didn't, Randy and her fans have no business demanding she adhere to a debate format she never agreed to in the first place.

I wasn't listening so have no idea what was said, unfortunately.

14. It's political talk radio
Not a debate. There are no official rules, but if someone brings up an arguable point it's probably a good idea to back it up, otherwise you'll come across as uninformed. That's all I'm saying.

I thought you were kidding because not backing up arguments is exactly the Bush admin MO.

15. There Are Always Rules
Edited on Wed Sep-29-04 07:33 PM by Crisco
To civil conversation. There are always rules on how to treat your guests if you want to have one.

I don't know what, if any, prior working relationship Patti and Randi have. If there was none, Randi would have known this could be a potentially volatile situation. This is radio and if you're interviewing a stranger, you don't know what kind of chemistry you're going to have with that person when the mics come on. There's no safety net while you're finding out. If you want to challenge someone, fine, but if you insist to pushing past their boundaries against their request, that's just rude.

5. I love Randi but she should have respected Patti's request
not to argue the subject.
It was an ugly scene.

6. I agree to a point
I think Randi was right in what she was saying, but she should have let the subject drop.

Then, Lars Larson called her to rub it in. Oy! Well, at least, she sucker punched him pretty well.

13. What an ass he is.
He started right in with "I love it when another liberal whups on you," or something like that. With a nasty laugh. Then, Randi said something like "What are you calling me for when you're rated #12?" (Sorry I can't be more specific.) She'd had ENOUGH, obviously, and wasn't going to take crap from him. She went on to say that AAR was beating him in his own city -- Portland. She finished with something like "Buh-bye Lars." I don't know if he hung up or if she cut him off or if the show just ended. But, she let him have it.
