What's the last song you heard?
Edited on Thu Sep-30-04 01:04 AM by mvd
Mine was "Around The Sun" on a full album preview of R.E.M.'s album of the same name. You can find it at myspace.com. Too many songs are bland this time! The lyrics save them a bit. Some really soar, though, like "Electron Blue," "Final Straw," "I Just Wanted To Be Wrong," and "Aftermath." It's good enough to buy, especially for an R.E.M. fan like me.

Goodbye Joe, me gotta go, me oh, my oh,
Me gotta go, pole the pirogue down the bayou.
My Yvonne, the sweetest one, me oh, my oh.
Son of a gun, we're gonna have big fun on the bayou.

Jambalaya and a crawfish pie and fillet gumbo,
'Cause tonight I'm gonna see my ma cher amio.
Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay oh.
Son of a gun, gonna have big fun on the bayou.

Thibodeaux, Fontaineaux, the place is buzzin'.
Kinfolk come to see Yvonne by the dozen.
Dress in style an' go hog wild, me oh, my oh.
Son of a gun, we're gonna have big fun on the bayou.

Jambalaya and a crawfish pie and fillet gumbo,
'Cause tonight I'm gonna see my ma cher amio.
Pick guitar an' fill fruit jar and be gay oh.
Son of a gun, we're gonna have big fun on the bayou.

Yeah, settle down, far from town, get me a pirogue,
An' I'll catch all the fish in the bayou.
Twice a month, we'll buy Yvonne what she need oh.
Son of a gun, we're gonna have big fun on the bayou.

Jambalaya and a crawfish pie and fillet gumbo,
'Cause tonight I'm gonna see my ma cher amio.
Pick guitar and fill fruit jar and be gay oh.

My head -- Medley between "Mandy" by Barry Manilow and "Thirsty Dog" by Nick Cave. (If that ain't weird, I don't know what is.)

My ears -- Someone had that one song by Smashmouth (no, not that one, the other one) playing in their office as I walked by.

There are too many bland keyboards and not enough drum and guitar IMO, but it could grow on me. There are some great songs and as I said, it's worth buying.

Is there anything to that?

And if R.E.M. recorded an album of nothing but Creed and Britney Spears covers, I'd still buy it.

But I think AFTP had more detours and creativity. I'd give the new one a B with room for increasing of the grade - it might be lower if I wasn't also such a huge R.E.M. fan. :hi:

34. RE: REM's newest
Haven't heard it yet but disappointing to read your review. Like my beloved Paul Westerburg, each new album they've done for the last six years was supposed to be their "return to form," and I guess there's no form left to return to anymore.

Things have gotten steadily blander and more inconsistent since "Monster," INHO as a life-long fan. Despite their ability to still kick out a good single (Great Beyond, Imitation of Life) they can't construct a cd I'm not bored with within 10 minutes. The loss of Bill Berry, the self-appointed pop fan of the group, was crucial, I guess.

I think the boys from Athens need to pack it in, don't you?

Hell, no.

R.E.M. is one of the best American rock bands ever, and I wouldn't be surprised if they last another 20 years.

Whenever a band loses a founding member, it's normal for them to mess with their sound. R.E.M. has done that with their last two albums, while still retaining what it is that we fans love about them.

And if you really think they should call it quits, then you should watch the "Perfect Square" concert DVD. They're an amazing live band, and still as energetic and enthusiastic as ever.

Although, with today's information age, people can gather all the information they need about a celebrity without having to stalk them. Back in Dylan's day they had to rummage through his trash. Yay, technology!

46. "Teach Your Children" by CS&N & guests at the Move On concert
last night. It was the final encore (it always is isn't it?). They were surprisingly good. I was expecting a more acoustic set, but no, it was all electric with guitars blazing. They rock pretty hard for a bunch of old guys. It was enjoyable in a nostalgic, psychedelic, surreal sorta way. The only bad part was that Keb-Mo was a No-Show. I was mainly hoping to see him since I'd seen all the others many times before. Raitt was awesome as usual though so that sorta made up for it.
