I finished Dark Tower VII
I actually feel physically exhausted. I'm one of those poor bastards who read the first installment when it came out thirty effing years ago, so this has been a long time to wait for its "conclusion".

I know one other DUer finished it a few days ago. Anyone else? We'll post spoilers in white text, like this: I can't believe Oy was the Crimson King all along! M'kay?

24. I'm the other DU'er who has finished the book
So, ZenLefty, any thoughts/comments on Vol 7? Without giving away too much, of course.

I certainly agree with King that "endings are heartless", especially since I, like you, have been following this saga for many years.

25. There you are!!
Overall, I enjoyed it. Honestly, I thought the ending was perfect. It was the ending that made the most sense.

Non-asinine hidden text follows: As soon as King wrote that Roland was feeling deja-vu, and that bit about the ending being bitter and heartless, and about 'life is a journey not a destination', I suspected he would do exactly what he did. Ka is a wheel, and for Roland, it was a big mo-fo wheel. If he got to the top of the tower and found eternal bliss and godlike powers, it wouldn't have felt right. Even the idea that the tower needed Roland as its new guardian seemed corny. So the ending, though I didn't expect it, was not unexpected.

Maybe if he returns with Cuthbert's horn it will be different next time. Maybe it's a little different every time.

I thought Susannah's exit was a bit awkward. But I'll bet she did too, were she a real person.

So what'd you think?

26. Overall, I enjoyed it as well.
Hidden text:

I agree with you re the ending. I didn't necessarily love it, but it made sense. And I do believe Cuthbert's horn will be the cause for redemption on the next turn of Ka.

I was a bit taken aback by Flagg's demise at the hand of Mordred. I thought surely he and Roland would meet up again. Flagg's death, even though I hated him, made me tear up a little. This guy has been the villian in so many of King's books. Saying adios to such a long time adversary was surprisingly difficult. I guess you could say I'm a little too emotional at times. ;-) (I was more weepy, however, when Roland called out the names of his family/friends at the base of the Tower. What a moment!)

King's presence in books 6 and 7 was definitely a surprise, but it made sense as a way to wrap up his career. I think he'll receive plenty of criticism for it, though.

Have you read Eyes of the Dragon? If so, remember King mentioned Ben and...dammit, I'm drawing a blank on his name...the king's other son, the "bad" kid...ah well, anyway...in EOTD, King mentioned that, as the boys set out on their journey to find Flagg at the end of the book, that we hadn't heard the last of them. I felt sure they would enter the story somewhere. I was surprised they didn't.

Well, it's over now and I'm glad I was there from beginning to end.

29. Yup.
I was a bit disappointed with Flagg's fate. A little anti-climactic. I wish he spent a little more time regarding the Crimson King, though (but his fate was quite fitting).

( <@> ) ( <@> )

I got the feeling Stephen King was wrapping things up as fast as he could. Good thing too, we could have been reading another 1200 pages of it had he not.

I'd forgotten that Eyes of the Dragon ended that way, though I remember Flagg was in that as well. Someday I may re-read a lot of that stuff, but not for a while. It was exhausting, and all those characters I got to know died off. Not a feel good book, but a good read nonetheless.

27. Finished last week....
I pre-ordered it from Fictionwise and read it on the bus and at night for two days straight after it arrived.

I think the ending worked. I smiled at the end and cried... oh, jeez, I cried a lot during that book.

I was so pissed off with SK for killing everyone I loved. Realize, I never much liked Roland. I'm glad Susannah got to live.... but....

It really did fit the theme, Ka like a wheel... we've been hearing that for 6 books and what, 30 years? I suppose we should have caught on by now. Though, since I write, the whole metafiction thing made me a bit uncomfortable... especially that bit about "channelling the story". I've felt that and it's disturbing as all hell... especially when you can't get back in later.

There's a part of me that hopes that in this iteration coming up that Susan Delgado lives, that this time, Roland doesn't make his stupid mistakes again and again and again....

And I'm really glad that Henry Dean did not come back.

30. Yeah
This final book was very sad. Eddie, Jake, even Oy. I knew something bad was going to happen to Oy when he wasn't eating. At least King knows how to foreshadow bad events - not wanting to completely shock you or surprise you with something like that.

What really did surprise me was that Roland wanted to sacrifice himself to save Stephen King's life. I knew he wouldn't willingly sacrifice Jake again, but I thought he'd at least chuck out the republican. :P
