In an apparently ethnically motivated incident, a man used a chain saw to smash the side window of a car driven by a Jordanian who lives in Mobile, where he owns a small business, authorities said.
Esam Almashni said Tuesday he was traveling with his American wife, Misty Almashni, and other family members on Interstate 10, just north of Moss Point, Miss., Sunday when a man driving an old pickup swerved toward his car.
Almashni, who is dark complexioned, pulled over behind the truck at the west end of the Pascagoula River bridge to check his 1997 Acura for damage.
Misty Almashni said Tuesday that the man then got out of his older model truck and tried to crank the chain saw as he began walking toward the car.
When the chain saw failed to start, the man used the saw "like a sword, baseball bat or something" to break the glass where she was sitting on the front passenger side of the car.
Misty Almashni said she was very frightened.
"It seemed to me that he had seen the 'Texas Chain Saw Massacre' movie one time too many," Misty Almashni said. "I love a scary movie, but not in real life when people are coming at you with a chain saw."
