Tech help please -- copying e-mail info to a new computer
Am I not seeing something right in front of me?

I'm trying to export Outlook Express e-mails, address book and settings to a new laptop that uses Outlook...

So I export it all to a disk... pop the disk into the new computer... and try to import.

And the damned thing says "can't find" info to import -- but it will only let me choose FOLDERS, not specific files.

Is there a folder within Outlook that I should dump all this before trying to import?

1. Outlook ssaves all it's data to a *.pst file
You just need to copy that *.pst file over to the new machine.

The catch is that this is sometimes a hidden file and you will have to change your preferences to allow you to search hidden files to find it.

Once you have the file copied over, you can just open Outlook on the new machine, then go to file, open and select the copy you created.

6. Oy. I'm giving up for today.
Got called away to do a million other things, returned in a less-than-zenlike state of mind.

Copied that file to a disk, know it's there because some disk space is used up, but it's not visible despite setting all the folder view options.

Oy. Feeling like quite a morAn at the moment. At least George Bush is on TV tonight... I'll be able to laugh at someone stupider than me. :D

Thanks, though, for your help, ET. I'm just too frazzled to make it work right now. :)

7. Outlook Express does NOT use .pst files
Do a search for .DBX files-- there will be a series of them, named Inbox.dbx, Outbox.dbx, Deleted Items.dbx, Folders.dbx, and perhaps several others. They'll be in a hidden folder somewhere deep within your Documents And Setting personal profile (Win2k and XP- not sure just where in Win98).

Also, look for your address book, which, naturally, is in yet another folder. Its extention is .wab
