I spent two years talking to this guy on various newsgroups and then in email and I finally lost my temper and said something nasty to him. I got a reply saying "all you women are bitches anyway" - which was a hell of a surprise because while I may at times have been bitchy I have never to my knowledge been a woman.

When you deal with someone in a text medium it's very easy to visualize them inaccurately.

The bad breath bit was a low blow. I'm going to go sulk about that one.

It throws off your Western Indo-European bretheren and sisteren. "A" always indicates the feminine gender in Western IE languages; not so in the Eastern branch.

Same happens with me all the time. Actually Boober IS a male name - I made it up for my faithful pooch, but my profile clearly lists me as female.

It doesn't bother me though. It has resulted in a few fun and amusing exchanges here on DU. :D

I try not to imagine too much about any personalities I meet online, because chances are I'll imagine wrong. But it doesn't really matter anyway, does it? To me, you're just another human being who's interested in Democratic politics. A thinking person who is probably smarter than your average American, in other words.
