13. I love this movie
Great music and cinematography. Reeve and Seymour at the peak of their powers.

Sappy? Yeah, well maybe. But when Reeve pulls that you-know-what out of his pocket, it kills me every time.

15. I liked the incredibly low tech time travel
It was a cool twist to the generally sci-fi attempts at traveling through time.

Good film!

5. Seeing as I write romance novels -- PEDNATRY ALERT
I guess I'm kind of an expert. To be a romance, as opposed to a romantic film, you need a happy ending.

The prototypical romance is Overboard with Goldie Hawn and her lover (blanking on his name). The Taming of the Shrew and Jane Eyre are also romances.

12. I got these off AFI's top 100 Romance movies of all time
Who would know better than them?

Besides, happy endings don't necessarily mean it's not a romance. What about Romeo and Juliet? Greatest romantic story of all time and it's sad as can be.

L.A. Story fits the bill with a happy ending. It's as quirky as any Steve Martin film ever was, and blindingly romantic. Watch for the storm sequence near the end, and the helpful highway traffic alert sign.

Is the mother of all romantic comedies.

When Harry Met Sally is the best of those on the list, though.

What's the big deal about Casablanca. I didn't care for it much - highly overrated, just like Gone with the Wind.

23. One of my all-time favorites, "The Princess Bride"
Speaking of all-time favorites... :-)

Forrest Gump featured multiple parallel love stories, of a sort: Forrest and Jenny (echoed perhaps most in his relationship with Bubba) and Forrest and his mother (perhaps echoed most in his relationship with Lieutenant Dan). And, finally, though not given time to develop much within the film, Forrest and Little Forrest.

I know that I'm deeply attached to my 'Little Forrest.' :o

Okay, maybe not your basic boy-girl romantic film, but it is romantic as hell. The first kiss was incredible and, at the end, when they dance to "Make Your Own Kind of Music" I cried like a little girl.

20. Write In Vote "An Affair to Remember"
That part at the end where pride started to get in the way of true love because she didn't want to be a burden or be pitied.

And he is just angry and hurt because he had put his heart on the line for perhaps the first time in his life. He feels deceived and betrayed. He doesn't realize that her supposed rejection comes from fear, and it is not how she really feels at all.

And through a dramatic, last second, graphic realization he suddenly realises what had happened and looks at her with acceptance and adoration.

They look at each other and a word doesn't have to be said.
This is true love after all. Beyond any physical limitations.

No...wait...

Maybe I'm thinking of "Shrek"

26. Bridget Jones' Diary
If I hadn't gotten married so damned young(or bloody young as a British girl would say), I would have been that character. I've watched in several times and never get sick of it. Funny, romantic, and a bit dark at times.

On side side note, why did that make such a big deal about how "fat" Renee Zelwiger got for the role? She didn't look fat. She looked bloody normal.

28. The Sandpiper.
60s flick about an affair between a married Episcopal priest and an artist.
Lovely California coast settings.

Besides the poignant but doomed romance, there's the conflicted love between the priest and his God, the artist and her pre-teen son, and her ambivalence about fitting into "ordinary" society.

Burton & Taylor star; in spite of their overexposure during this period, they did OK in this movie.

And the novel's even better; an amazing feat for a movie "novelization".

32. Moonstruck
"Loretta, I love you. Not like they told you love is, and I didn't know this either, but love don't make things nice - it ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess.

"We aren't here to make things perfect. The snowflakes are perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us! We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and *die*.

"The storybooks are *bullshit*. Now I want you to come upstairs with me and *get* in my bed!"

More than one loving couple under a crazy moon.

And a happy ending.

45. They apparently forgot Zeffirelli's 1968 "Romeo and Juliet"...
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 11:30 AM by Atlant
...cause if there was room on that list for "Lady and the
Tramp" and "Working Girl", there was sure room for this
movie that Roger Ebert describes as "the magical high point
of [Zeffirelli's] career."

http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/ebert_reviews/2000/09/091701.html

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0063518/maindetails

Then again, given that it's the "American Film Institute"
and Zeffirelli's film is "International", maybe it just
didn't count. In which case you can probably add about 99
more movies to this list beyond "R&J".

42. Why is "Pretty Hooker" on that list?
I mean, jeez, when I'm looking for romance at the movies, the tale of a soulless corporate raider leasing the use of a young woman's body for a week does it for me!

But really, there ought to have been a "none of the above" category.

And my current favorite is "Sense and Sensibility," by the great Ang Lee and the wonderful Emma Thompson. So there!

On edit: Who says only women go for romance?

52. "Four Weddings and a Funeral"
along with "Mickey Blue Eyes" and "Groundhog Day" are way up there on my list right now - I've watched all three several times in the last few weeks.

Not necessarily the most 'romantic' movies - certainly nothing like some of the others on this list - but the kind of romantically-tinged comedies that a dude can get way into. And only two car chases (both in "Groundhog Day") among them.
