Most people know this fellow as a character on Law and Order, but he's a lot more than that. I'm a fan of his not only because of his acting talent, but because of the type of person he is. He's starred in some notable and important films, including The Killing Fields (1984), Mind Walk (1990) A Captive in the Land (1990)-which was important in US-Russian relations, as it was the first joint effort film after the fall of the Soviet Union-and The Matthew Shepard Story (2002). He also played, gratis, in the film The Commission. Sam is active in helping others, be it City Meals on Wheels or Refugees International. And he doesn't just lend a name or attend one fundraiser. He has offered his services for free time and again. If you've seen him host the PBS series The Visionaries, it might interest you to know he doesn't get paid for his work-and that he studies up on each non-profit featured in an episode. He's been a member of the Board of Directors of Refugees International for 18 years, and has paid his own way on fact finding missions and to fundraisers.
So here's to you, Mr. Waterston-a good actor and a fine human being. Happy 64th birthday today.
