Do you have Asperger's or ADD?
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/9.12/aqtest_pr.html

I scored 37.

I am showing this to my counselor tomorrow. I hope she'll take me seriously. I am not schizophrenic. I am not paranoid. My issues did not start just a few months or years ago, it goes back for as long as I remember. Even doctors who studied me at the time, weren't sure what I had but knew I was different.

2. I'm not but
my son is...he's 16, was diagnosed at age 8 or 9. He was screened and tested for it at TEACCH here at UNC. They are an Autism research and education organization. There are many resources on the web and lots of books available on the subject.

15. How does one go about getting diagnosed with ADD?
Because, really, I can't do anything ( well, most things  ) for more than 5 minutes at a time...

16. You need an MD and a psych eval
I was actually diagnosed as hyperactive when I was a kid, so that helped. There's a lot of diagnostic criteria I meet, though it probably helped that at the psych eval I both locked my keys in my car before the session and left my purse in the doctor's office after the session. I was kind of a mess before the diagnosis. Finding out I had ADD was quite revelatory.

4. I've scored very high on the wired asperger's test
Edited on Mon Dec-06-04 08:46 PM by ikojo
as well as a longer ADD quiz that is online somewhere. There was also a report about adult ADD on 60 minutes last night.

I just retook the wired magazine test and scored a 39.

9. I totally understand, HypnoToad....
When I was in second grade, I used to fall asleep in class alot. At first the teacher thought it was because I was getting enough sleep at home. When that did not turn out to be the case, they decided to administer a series of tests. The only thing I recall from that is they found out I wasn't an idiot and I also had to start seeing the school speech pathologist, something I did until fifth grade. Once I got into junior high I no longer saw the speech pathologist.

When I was a toddler, my mom said I would sit in a door way with one leg on each side and bang my head. My dad thought I was retarded and suggested that my mom take me to a shrink. Thank god she did not because it was the late 60s and lord knows what would have happened!

Yeah, I suspect I'm an aspie.

23. ! I was the same way. Except I never got tested... but I did also
see a speech therapist.

I don't recall banging my head against anything, but there was plenty going on...

Thanks for the input (and to all!)

10. I live with someone who was diagnosed as autistic when she was 4, now
I have diagnosed her with Asperger's Syndrome. Her's is not a difficult diagnoses. No tests needed. She has a genius level IQ and has advanced degrees in Mathmatics and Computer Science. But, whoa, on a social level she is the most difficult person in the world to have a linear conversation with. Also, she can multitask up a storm and still get 99percent completed. It's an amazing thing to behold but so damn nerve wracking that I'm constantly on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I tend to be extremely empathetic. I feel the noise in her brain. In other words, I'm the complete opposite of her and at times it's a nightmare.

:)

although a month or so ago I'd have probably scored up in the high 30s, I'm just seeing things differently lately - which makes me next question the validity of self-administered psych exams

14. I scored 30, but I'm not Asperger's
But rather as a child, I was overly empathetic and sensitive. Unfortunately, I learned that the world was painful and shut it out during the time period that most children learn how to socialize. As a result, socialization to me has been like a second language. As an adult, I am becoming "normal" though. There are some things though that just aren't second nature like they are for most people.

28. You were probably an Indigo Child, like me.
http://www.indigochild.com

What is an indigo Child?

As a summary, here are the ten attributes that best describe this new kind of child, the Indigo Child (named by those who predicted it).
They come into the world with a feeling of royalty (and often act like it)

They have a feeling of "deserving to be here," and are surprised when others don't share that.

Self-worth is not a big issue. They often tell the parents "who they are."

They have difficulty with absolute authority (authority without explanation or choice).

They simply will not do certain things; for example, waiting in line is difficult for them.

They get frustrated with systems that are ritually oriented and don't require creative thought.

They often see better ways of doing things, both at home and in school, which makes them seem like "system busters" (nonconforming to any system).

They seem antisocial unless they are with their own kind. If there are no others of like consciousness around them, they often turn inward, feeling like no other human understands them. School is often extremely difficult for them socially.

They will not respond to "guilt" discipline ("Wait till your father gets home and finds out what you did").

They are not shy in letting you know what they need.

I've heard the term and I've heard of ADD but I don't know what it is. Is it similar to ADD??

19. No..
.... it is a mild form of autism I believe.

I have scored borderline on asperger's tests before, and in retrospect, it would explain a few things. But I don't feel like it hurts me much in real life...

22. 43 out of 50.
At least, that's what I got last time I took it. (Or maybe it was 45. High, anyway.)

I saw that when that issue of Wired came out; my results on that test made me decide to investigate further, and I was formally diagnosed with Asperger's last year.

I'm pretty social. I do bore easily, and sometimes I find meeting new people a hassle, but this seems like a fair assessment.

Edited on Mon Dec-06-04 10:57 PM by RagingInMiami
But I scored a 5 on the test, leaving me to conclude that perhaps ADD and Asperger's are on two different ends of the spectrum.

29. I think this is more accurate.
AD/HD (which is the true clinical name for the disorder) and Asperger's Syndrome are two totally different disorders with very different symptoms. Asperger's Syndrome is a variation on the Autism "spectrum" and tends to be characterized by difficulty relating to others, narrow interests and some of the other symptoms of autism. However, those with Asperger's have normal cognitive abilities and average to well-above-avergae verbal abilities. While people with AD/HD might have some trouble in the social skills area, the symptoms of AD/HD are very different from autism or Asperger's. That said, there are some researchers who think there may be similar brain mechanisms that are affected in these disorders, but most likely in different ways.
