I may have just upset a family.. I hope it all turns out ok
Edited on Tue Dec-07-04 03:45 PM by SoCalDem
I just came from Costco and as I got out of my car to unload stuff I was "accosted" by two pit bulls.. A Mom (with a collar) and a young neutered male pup (about 6 mo).. They jumped on me and were OVERLY friendly, but I could not get them Off of me.. Of course it had rained, and I was covered with muddy footprints..

Like I said they seemed friendly, but I have no fear and talked soothingly to them and did not turn my back on them.. I used the flat palm side of my hands to push them off..

I called the pound, because we have several small kids on our street who will be coming home from school (kids still walk home here), and I could not have stood it if a kid had run from them and triggered an aggressive action..

I told the lady at the pound repeatedly, that they seemed friendly, and to tell the dogcatchers that they were NOT mean.. I hope no harm comes to them, but I just do not trust those dogs around little kids they have not been raised with..

Hopefully a gate was left open and a family out there is frantically calling the pound in hopes they are brought in..

They really startled me when they both galloped towards me..Got a bit of an adrenaline rush to be sure..

1. I think you did a good thing.
Hopefully the situation was taken care of.

2. The dogs should never have been loose.
While you handled the situation well, someone else may not have. I know I would have done everything wrong and maybe have ended up being attacked. You did the right thing. Dog owners who let their dogs run free are irresponsible. Besides, you may have saved the dogs from being hit by a car or saved the owner from being sued if a small child was attacked.

IMHO, you did the right thing - don't feel badly.

3. No, you did the right thing, the pound is the place for them
when we first got our dog, he jumped out of the window (trying to follow my boyfriend) and thank goodness someone turned him in because we got him right back (and then we kept the window closed!) If those dogs harmed someone, the owners might not get a chance to get them back, so they should be grateful. Plus, the fact that they neutered the dog showed they are responsible.

4. Hey,
did you watch Fear Factor last night? Just might have taken care of that lack of fear of yours...

You absolutely did the right thing. Even a wonderful owner would be horrified and damaged for life if their dog did something terrible to someone. And a crappy owner shouldn't have the dogs to begin with. You never know what might set off even some 'fun play,' particularly with two dogs together. A kid would make a good little rag doll to shake around.

8. I have never seen Fear Factor.. (not a "reality show" person)

I hope they get back to their family.. They both had collars and I know they are pets.

But on our street alone, there are about 7 or 8 kids under 10 who would run from them..and school gets out in a couple of hours

6. You probably helped the dogs too
They could have just as easily run into the street in front of a car

7. I love Pit-bulls but
they can be very scary, especially when the charge you. I'm sure the pound will deal with it appropriately.

10. I just hope that because they have collars, there will be some
identification if there are any tags. Often, the pounds do not even try to contact the owner. My son's dog was picked up by animal control. She had a tag with contact information and they did not even bother to contact him. They just put her down.

9. Two pit bulls running toward me? I think I'd have dropped dead
right then and there.

I have an irrational (OK, not so irrational) fear of pit bulls.

15. There are very few things that really scare me..
I have had MANY close calls and survived them ALL..

Car on train tracks.. complete WITH train :(

Close enough to reach out and touch a startled leopard shark (while diving)

reached into a crevice (yeh..I know) and came out with a Moray eel attached to my hand (I was about 8)

was swept out to sea (I was about 4) and washed up about a mile down the beach fully "breaded with sand"..

Walked out onto a precipice(look-out tower) at an old spanish fort (300Ft down to the rocks below)..Couldn't read Spanish then.. I thought "Peligro" meant pelicans, so I went out there to look down at them.. A guy with a broom made me grab it and he pulled me back.. (It was very old and crumbly)

I found a 3-toed sloth at a bus-stop and brought the "monkey" home with me.. ( I was about 9)

Was chased by a tapir..THAT DID SCARE ME..

Just a few I can remember off the top of my head :)

19. So a couple of pitbulls rushing at you
Is a piece of cake ay ;-) .......:faint: :wow:

I'm not one to scare easily where critters are concerned but the hairs on the back of my necks would have been bristling with some...
:ahem: concern :freak:

Calling the pound was the right thing to do. Did anyone see Oprah last week when she had on a woman who saw a pitbull chasing down a little 8 year old boy? The woman stopped her car, got out and covered the boys body with her own until help arrived. No doubt that dog would have ripped the boy to shreds and killed him if she hadn't come to his rescue.

Personally, I like pit bulls when they are raised as loving pets, and not beaten and abused into biting monster dogs.

Remember Peetie on the little rascals was a pitt bull. It's just that every few years, the a-hole rednecks seem to adopt another breed for "bumping" (aka fighting). Back in the 1980's, it was doberman pinchers and german sheppards. Now it's Rottweilers and Pitt bulls.

Every dog has a unique personality, but so many a-holes raise them to be mean, you really have to be wary of any stray dog.

12. Don't worry about it. You did what you had to do.
That's a rush, isn't it? Nothing like strange pit bulls galloping towards you to liven the day up.

16. you did the right thing
God forbid, but if something happened later with the kids in the neighborhood you'd never be able to forgive yourself for not doing anything. What you did was for the best for everyone, including those dogs.

18. This mom thanks you from the bottom of her heart.
You did the right thing.

I called the Animal Control people on my neighbor's pit bull who is VERY friendly to me and my son, but who knows how it would react to another child?

The creature was managing to escape just about the time school lets out in my neighborhood nearly every day. Neighbors have repaired wthe weakness, thank God.

I had to do it, for the kids' sake and for Shadow's.
