Earthsea on Sci-Fi - should I watch it?

I have not read anything by Ursula K. LeGuin before, even though I have read a ton of sci-fi & fantasy over my lifetime. I just have somehow missed her books.

So, I know nothing about this other than it stars that hot babe Kristin Kreuk, Danny Glover, Isabella Rossellini and some other guy as the main hero.

My local paper, whom I don't always trust, called it the best miniseries of the year.

Looks like it could be interesting, though I'm dying for good fantasy that is not just about young innocents (Frodo & Sam) overcoming seemingly impossible odds (journey to Mordor to destroy the ring) to overcome the ultimate evil (Sauron)with the help of a wise old mentor (Gandalf).

Seems like you can take replace what I have in parantheses with different names and you have 90% of the fantasy lit out there.
