New Study Clears up Myths about Constipation
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=571&e=4&u=/nm/constipation_myths_dc

By Charnicia E. Huggins

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The idea that chronic constipation is the result of a low-fiber diet may be one of the many myths and misconceptions about the condition, according to a new review of the issue.

The same is true of the idea that consuming more fluids will ease constipation, or that those who rely on laxatives will become dependent on them.

"Defecation is a very private process rarely discussed with the physician but more easily discussed with friends," study author Dr. Stefan A. Muller-Lissner of Humboldt University in Berlin told Reuters Health. "Therefore it is prone to unsubstantiated theories and beliefs derived from subjective impressions and unsystematic observations."

13. We lactose intolerant people
can have a nice dish of ice cream.

It goes through like a wildcat backwards, but it tastes better than milk of mag.

5. uh... man, nothing personal, but I go A LOT
and as a vegetarian I eat a lot of fiber.

My in-laws and my dad, all are heavy meat eaters and constantly complain they can't crap at all.

go figure. This study is a bunch of crap, probably paid for by the Atkins Foundation or the Beef Mongers.

And yes - beer does seem to help.

10. Isn't emotional upset and anxiety behind most constipation?
Or should I be asking a doctor, and not friends?

19. Sugar
My doctor once perscribed a sugary (very thick) liquid that they use to sweeten medicine with. I was still nursing my daughter and couldn't use typical medicine. We were in the middle of selling our house and it was a few weeks...well, um you know...I was pretty sick.

21. Chronic constipation is caused by eating Army field rations
Every GI knows the Absolute Truth: army field rations will stop you up better than anything short of shoving a cork up your ass.

There's a reason beer is so popular among field soldiers: you get back to garrison, put away two or three beers, and you'll shit normally in a day or two.

We once left a guy to guard a case of C-rations and two radios (a VRC-46 and a Watkins-Johnson 8640) while we went in to talk to the supported commander the day before a two-week field problem kicked off. Two hours later, we came back outside to find he'd tuned the WJ to the local rock station and eaten the whole case of C-rations. And no, he didn't shit once during the entire exercise.
