What the hell is my brother's dog doing?
finally I have a reason to do a copyCAT! Not that there needs to be a reason, but Allenberg's post & responses got me thinking someone here might know the answer!

My brother and his wife adopted a dog years ago and they think it had a bad puppy-hood. He's a nice little doggy but some things he does are a little strange.

One thing - he has a soft bear that he plays with, it's about half his size. He likes to play rough with it, like if someone shakes the bear around on a rug, the dog will grab it from them and shake it around a bit. but then he'll end the play by putting the bear down on it's back and he stays over it, watching it motionless. If everyone is quiet and still, the dog (looking like he's in a trance & staring at the bear), will do slow & rhythmic chest-compressions on the bear with one paw. My brother says he's doing CPR, which is exactly what it looks like and we've laughed ourselves silly watching this.... but we really think he's checking to see that he's killed it or something....

checking for signs of life OR doggy CPR?

anyone?

1. Checking for signs of life
Dogs play with toys in emulation of killing prey. Sounds cute as hell though.

4. yeah, and he'll
go on doing this as long as it's quiet and no one moves. My brother has seen him do this for a really long time, but when I'm around, I think it's so funny, eventually I have to laugh!

3. At least he hasn't started dry humping it yet
That's fairly common too.
