In praise of the meidocre.
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 03:19 PM by redqueen
I often think about artists who aren't so great. Mostly because people rag on them all the time. Whether it's not-so-good paintings, not-so-good music, not-so-good acting, not-so-good singing... whatever. It's good enough to get them noticed, but not great. So then there's all the bitching and ragging about how they're not so good.

Well I just wanted to say that I appreciate the fact that people have different tastes, one man's trash and all that, and that I think it's a good thing. People enjoying mediocre things makes it possible for artists to enjoy doing what they love, even if they can't make a living at it.

So even though I don't like Jessica Simpson's singing, or Will Smith's acting, or Limp Bizkit's music, I'm glad they have fans.

To all consumers of not-so-good stuff, I salute you!

4. what can I say; I'm a glutton for punishment
I was feeling generous today, so I decided to allow U2 "mediocre" status in my own mind for a few brief seconds (which have since passed)...

7. In the spirit of Bill Lumberg...
um...yeah....I'm gonna have to go ahead and um....disagree with you there.

You had me until you mentioned Limp Bizkit. Jessica Simpson, Will Smith, I can ignore. I hurt in my soul when I think that I have to share the planet with the pathetic nu-metal music-to-beat-your-wife-to-and-smash-beer-cans-on-your-head garbage that is Limp Bizkit. There's nothing mediocre about them, they're just crap.

8. Yeah, maybe I picked a bad example there.
You have a good point about them not being mediocre. I was trying to think of a band I ragged on, and that was the first one I thought of.

9. How about Switchfoot as a better example?
There's a band that sucks, but you don't really want to expend any energy hating them when a band like Evanescence walks the earth. That would be my defenition of mediocre.

I would have said 311 as well, that is until they butchered that Cure song. May their loins rot and fall off.

10. Sure...
But after further thought, I guess I salute fans of crap as well. That whole trash / treasure thing again.
