Lions Club hopes to put on the world's largest snowball fight

Sal Saccomanno expects to find himself standing in a Wauconda park surrounded by at least 3,000 antsy people armed with snowballs. He can't wait -- after all, it's not every day you see a world record set right before your eyes.

That's what he and other members of the Wauconda Lions Club hope will happen Saturday morning when they try to stage the world's largest snowball fight. The scene is a 30-acre patch of soccer fields at Cook Park in the far northwest suburb of about 12,000.

The goal? A spot in the Guinness World Records, which recognizes such arcane contests, a little positive publicity for the town, and a chance to raise money for charity.

For that kind of reward, Saccomanno, the Lions Club president, is willing to take a few risks. That's why he plans to stand between the two, 1,500-person teams to officially start the massive snowfight.

"I'm going to take the hit for the club,'' he said, though he's also going to wear a motorcycle helmet, padded jacket and leather chaps -- just in case he becomes a target.
