Pentagon Considers Teaching Computers To Read

TROY, N.Y. -- Sure, you can read. But can your computer?

If it does, can it learn from what it reads just like you do?

That's a question a Pentagon agency is willing to spend at least $400,000 to try to answer.

The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency has granted a contract to two professors at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York state to see if they can build a machine that can learn by reading.

It's hoped they can come up with a machine that can read parts of textbooks and answer questions based on the material.

If that happens, the devices could use artificial intelligence to read military plans or manuals and adjust themselves in the heat of battle.
