Question, I did some welding today... and I managed to get some little
bubbles in the weld... can I charge more for the bubbles, or should I just get the going rate...... would I charge per bubble? Lost on this one.... oh boy, this is going to be fun.

1. calculate it based
the volume, in mL, of the average bubble, than multiply that by the number of volumes, mess up, and just say "screw it, i'll charge 'em $300 extra bucks." :)

2. Actually... the bubbles are porosities and they are a testament to the
fact that I did a crappy job. I had to grind back some of the beads and do over. I was using a Mig, there was paint and rust, not a good combination.. it'll do though, looks good from my house. :)

5. i stand corrected...i forgot the handyman's secret weapon

the front grill of our beat-up work van was held on by duct tape for a good 3 years. all that was left were the strings inside the tape

7. Ummmmm, nope. Twas on a bulldozer blade... I was in a huge hurry... and
I knew better. It actually ended up quite well. I am and have been a jam up welder for over 30 years... it was just the machine I am stitched into using, (we don't have a stick machine in the shop) and it was in a bad place, paint was involved, yada yada...

8. don't furget to blame it on the whip!
.

.

Those things are notorious for inconsistent feeds if they aren't maintained.

Mig is great tho when the equipment all works great, specially on long welds - no breaks in the weld, no changing sticks all the time, and no flip-floppin the helmet to tire out them neck muscles!

And, as you said,

there's the yada yada thing

:silly:

10. Let me tell you a short story.... once upon a time, on a farm far far
away from here.... a man in a station wagon drove up and popped his hood, (not welding helmet) and brought out a couple small gauge welding leads. I asked him, what are you going to do with that sir? (I was perhaps 23 and naive at the time) and he said, "I am going to weld with it". He had a SST 130 continuous duty, DC, alternator based welder under the hood. He had a small silver box with a toggle on it to switch from charge car to weld steel. It could run a string of trouble lights, a 8 inch welding grinder, and charge 6, 12, 24 and 36 volts.

It was able to weld stainless, cast, steel, basically anything and it did a BEAUTIFUL job. Continuous duty go figure. He left after telling me that I couldn't make one since I didn't have extreme grade diodes nor the very heavy gauge stator winding.

Well, don't you know... I found an old 1055 Delco alternator, perhaps a 72 or a 90 amp model, took it apart, did away with the regulator, shorted the two small terminals to the rotor circuit so that I could pass 12 volts through the rotor directly, added an old garbage truck switch under the hood of my '79 ford straight six, piggy backed the delco alternator where the air pump used to be, (now I have "two" alternators) and put a 110 volt outlet in the garbage truck switch box.

The push button on the box either sent or didn't send 12 volts to the rotor. The circuitry for the second alternator was completely separate from the truck except for the 12 volt feed.

I welded stainless, cast, steel, used gouging rods, whatever and I never burned it up. I fixed the chains in a car wash, gutted heat risers on friends cars and welded them up so they didn't leak, welded whenever and wherever I I chose. I had a good deal of fun with that little gem, oh, I put a PTO cable to my carb linkage with a piece of small chain so that it could "be out of the picture" while I was just driving.... sooooooo the man from Texas with the SST 130 was just a wee bit off when he told me that I couldn't do this or that because I didn't have this or that. Necessity is a mother, and what a mother it is..... hope you liked the story.

12. Yup - good story, those 1055's were the HD in Caddies, Impalas, etc.
.
.
.

and came with outputs up to 140A!

Oh - and the '79 Ford didn't get past me either

The pix below will explain why

WAS a 351M in it when I bought it in 1990

1992 I bought myself a 79 Mk V

1995 - the Lincoln chewed the cam gear and got parked (and rotted out the floor and frame)

1997, rebuilt the bottom end of the Lincoln Engine (400CID), and put the steel gear on the cam for the timing chain, and put it in the Truck!

Not the mileage you would get on ur 6 mind you,

but even with the Camper loaded - It Hauls ASS!!!

over 250,000 cliks on her now, but I'm keepin' it - like forever!

oh yeah,

'ceptin for me covering up the rust spots 'n all, THAT'S ORIGINAL FACTORY PAINT!!

and, the original factory alternator, - NOT rebuilt - ORIGINAL . . .

They don't, and won't make stuff like that anymore . .

(sigh)

15. I've been to Toronto... been to the Canadian side of the falls several
times... I like the atmosphere in Canada... I imagine it to be "Europe-like". Not sure, I just imagine it to be. I toured the vineyards on your side of the falls.... absolutely loved it.

My dad and I grew 10 acres of these for all of my years while I was home... "all of my years"... bad grammar? Or colorful reminiscence....

9. Just sell it as extra-lightweight metal - or
"In case of water landing, use this as a flotation device" and tack on an extra 15%

Hey, the US Gov't would happily pay for that extra 'feature'

11. U.S. Govt, used to work for them.... well, for Jebbie's state anyhoo....
and let me tell you, it is no joke when they say that they would be better off just piling the money up in a heap and throwing a match on it... truly. The things I saw made my brain hurt.
