Is underground rock too original for DU?

Sweartagahd, every time I post something -- anything -- about the music that truly excites me, bands like U.S. Maple, Saccharine Trust, Lungfish, the Nation of Ulysses, Drive Like Jehu, Oneida, et al, incredibly inventive and vital stuff, crickets. Nada. Thread-death. Does anyone around here (other than the handful of usual suspects, y'all know who you are) dig any deeper than the Clash, Smiths, Flaming Lips and Pixies?

2. Uh....I'm always posting about stuff like that.....

I just think that there's a limited audience for it here, which is why I get crickets in response as well. I don't know that it's a matter of "too original". Finding out about a lot of those bands is not easy and probably involve a lot more digging and time than most people have to devote to music.

I'm an obsessive and I can barely keep up with stuff.

Lungfish is (was?) a phenomenal band, as are (were Jehu). Do you like The Hot Snakes?

NOU was good for their time but I can't listen to them that much any more since there have been so many half assed imitators.

I always lumped Saccharine Trust in with those latter day SST bands, all of whose sole musical credential seemed to be smoking pot with Greg Ginn or something. That's unfair, I know but that's the only thing I know about them.

Are you into Slint at all? I'm so excited to see them in March at their reunion shows in New York?

Are you into Deerhoof or Wolf Eyes at all?

8. Lungfish are still around, bless their droning hearts.

They just did a quickie tour of a few cities a few months ago, so I finally got to see 'em. Unbelievable.

Sac Trust were an early SST band. Their first album was SST 006. Their late stuff was wanky crap, but the first three were amazing.

I'm WAY into Slint - they're not doing a Cleveland show (it almost happened!), so yeah, I may travel, if I can even get a ticket.

I dig Deerhoof, haven't checked out Wolf Eyes yet. Maybe I'll surf on over to Epitonic and see if anything's there.

On Edit: OK, I just found a Wolf Eyes MP3, and HOLY FUCK! I must go get records.

I know what you mean, though. A few weeks ago my Broken Social Scene thread dropped like a rock. As far as obscure music goes, I will admit to a certain degree of snobbery. It's just not as cool when everybody is listening to what you're listening to. I guess that's why I don't mind when people respond to some of my music with a "Huh?".

Are they still around? I remember hearing them on the college radio station back in the late 80's or early 90's.

The reason I think underground threads die is that alot of the music you listed falls well below the radar of alot of folks. Hell, without the college radio station in my town, I never would have heard of any of the bands you mentioned. The beauty of underground/alternative music is that its UNDERGROUND! If every schmo knew about it, it would become commercial and lose its indie appeal. Look at what happened to bands like R.E.M post "Document" or Modest Mouse, their roots were humble indie until they made it on mainstream radio and now everybody hates them as commercial.

Fear not. There are those of us who dig a bit deeper into the vaults.

Oh yeah, the other reason folks don't chime in is that they're too busy arguing amongst themselves about who's music is better and why.

I have had to struggle to keep up with the newer underground stuff the past number of years due to lack of time to keep up with stuff and browse the local alt CD places. I count on you guys to mention bands I might not know about otherwise. Back when I had time to go out all the time, I was pretty up on most of the alternative stuff. I just saw a CD from a band called Horrorpop(s)? in a chain store. They looked kind of interesting, reminded me of The Cramps.

I can't even get a nod of agreement when I bring up Camper Van Beethoven who put out a terrific anti-Bush CD this past year and who are pretty well known. Likewise effort to promote some Kerry benefits the Pernice Brothers (former Scud MOuntain Boys) did 'round election time.

I guess its impossible to find folks who are passionate about our own indie bands - we're all busy being passionate about our own bRands.

For what its worth, I knew 4 of your six, but must admit that I thought Drive Like Jehu was over after a burst in the mid 90's. And I hadn't heard of Saccharine Trust since the World Broken LP - which I still dig out now and again. What was that - 1987, maybe?

It's a small book, and a quick read. Worth looking out for.

14. Depends on the content...

Not as much as band as the content.

I like content that tells a story or maturely exudes a situation. There are examples from just about every genre that have me hooked. Johnny Cash to Public Enemy to Jefferson Airplane to REM to the B-52s, there's always something worthwhile somewhere.

But generally speaking, I don't like mindless noise (most of metal), empty "kill _____" rubbish (a lot of metal, rap, whatever), incest, suicide, or loving one's bar (country), or bubblegum ('alternative' once the corporate element took over in the early 90s (e.g. Spin Doctors :puke: and arguably REM at one point))
