Poll question: Poll: Is your personality the same in real life as on DU?
Me, kinda in between. I'm goofy sometimes, ornery sometimes, snarky sometimes, but I like to think that I'm pretty much the same person no matter what medium I present myself in. How about you?

30. LOL - a big "me too" here.
My invective skills are pretty damn strong when I'm letting 'em off on the fly in real life conversation, but when there's time to sit down and compose my thoughts, I'm a much better wiseass.

There are people I've worked with for years who've only recently found out I knew how to paint. I still don't know how to talk to people very well...

5. I'm a little more outspoken in "real life"
I'm careful on line since it's so easy to come across meaner or harsher than you intended. I'm pretty sarcastic and people either come to accept that pretty quickly or avoid me in real life, but years on line (I go back to Usenet) have taught me that my humor translates poorly to cyberspace.

For whatever reason, I am much more reserved here at DU, and find myself quietly lurking 99% of the time.

I guess I just don't interact well with Internet forums.

As to anyone else...My lively hood depends upon it and they are right wing /evangalical fanatics...It is useless...If they are unreasonable and uncovertable..Those who have tried with those types, they pay a price in terms of a working relationship...
Not worth it...Outside the work place with neighbors, etc..I am very up front...Luckily, my repug neighbors are just GOP hangers on...In some ways think they are moderates...So my conversations can be civil...Get me with wackos', gun nuts...Freepers..Better move on before it gets way tooo hot..

18. I was in your neighborhood a few months ago.
I was in town for the DNC with my College Democrats group and we walked around Cambridge before we went to an event at Harvard. We had lunch at this burger place that has sandwiches named after famous people, I can't remember what it's called, but it's on Massachusetts Avenue not far away from Harvard.

25. That's the one!
Oh, man, I never had as much fun anywhere as I did that week in Boston - and I spent a fair amount of time in Cambridge, albeit mostly at Harvard. I remember now which burger I had, it was the Bill Clinton:

"The Bill Clinton - Riding off into the sunset with Monica. BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, french fries and cole slaw."

Dude, what I wouldn't give to get back out to Boston one of these days. Everyone was so warm and friendly, I remember I got lost in downtown Boston with one of my College Dems buddies, and we asked this couple for directions, we were trying to get to Kerry HQ on Canal Street. They showed us exactly where to go, and didn't leave us until we got where we needed to go. What a great area, I had a blast!

Edited on Sun Feb-20-05 07:57 PM by Faye
but a little more outgoing and wild online......i also have the problem where i may be joking around or acting pissed off about something and other people think i'm being serious and it starts a bunch of chaos.....but i kind of do the same thing in real life too

i'm a LITTLE bit more quiet in person (unless i'm drinking) but i am much more outgoing than i used to be throughout my childhood and high school, etc. i am actually VERY outgoing in general, but in person i am NOT a conversation starter. if someone else starts it up, then i go at it.....

basically my personality is pretty much the same in person too - i am probably nicer and friendlier (and calmer!) in person though.

Just the few times I've seen you post, you're quite the flirtatious charmer! Reminds me of my best friend; he'll flirt with anything that moves. I swear, we were at the college library once when he was protesting a library fine, and by the time he was through with her, he had that 82 year old librarian wanting to carry his babies! It's easier to be outspoken or flirtatious online rather than in the real world, though. Gets you in less trouble.

14. No, I can't keep it totally real here.
I have to censor myself quite often due to people's extreme sensitivity. A lot of times I'll write a post and just erase it because of the PC attitude but I like here and will remain within the rules. DU is the best source of real news on the net for my money. There are just some things I think are silly and one of them is that you can't talk like an average Joe. I'm a blue collar construction worker, salty language is part of everyday life. We're all adults here we should be above complaining about silly shit like whether or not certain words are "offensive". Didn't anyone ever learn "Sticks and Stones"? Ah, whatever. It's a minor complaint and a condition I can live with but it does prevent me from being as real as possible.

dammit. Half-Italian, half mongrel, raging river of passion. :loveya:

But I can fade B-) into the background and play dumb real well, especially in a "socializing as bloodsport" situation at a party or show or work. Then, it's just fun to watch people shred themselves, reveal themselves, etc. lots of material there for writing and songs and art.

So, I'm sometimes a lurker, but usually I like to stay engaged. :toast:

32. I'm actually pretty shy
especially when meeting new people. I'm definitely an introvert. However, I express my opinions quite a bit when I feel comfortable enough with somebody, or if I discover that we share the same views. I'm 32 years old, and my heart still beats a mile a minute when I get up to speak at a Meetup or in front of a class! I think I have become pretty good at hiding my nervousness, though.

34. No, I'm much more polite and reserved in real lilfe.
I save my argumentativeness for the courtroom and here I just get silly and a little cantankerous at times. In real life I'm silly at times, but very cordial and caring. In a forum where you don't know who you're writing to it's hard to be caring in any genuine sense. And when attacked I occasionally respond, sometimes bitingly (which I wouldn't in real life) but usually just walk away from the thread and let the attacker have the last say.

OTOH, there are subjects discussed here which I participate in which I never seem to have the chance to discuss elsewhere.

And I say things here about right-wingers I'd never say to a right-winger in person.

In real life, I am shy as hell, and I'm as bad as Dubya when it comes to screwing up word pronunciations. And in real life, I'd rather not talk about myself, yet I'm pretty open here.

Edited on Sun Feb-20-05 10:22 PM by last_texas_dem
This isn't saying a whole lot, considering it's taken me over three years to break 1800 posts on here! But I'm very shy in real life, and unfortunately seem to be getting more and more that way.

I'm also a diplomat in real life (I hate conflict) which I try to be on here; though I do feel a little more comfortable expressing myself on here since I'm among mostly like-minded people.

I'm a nice guy in real life, which I hope I'm perceived to be by those who read my posts on here.

ON EDIT: I also wanted to say that I express myself much better in writing, I think. Though I sometimes think my writing style for a message board is a bit formal... still, I think I come across much better in writing. Because of my shyness, I'm bad at coming up with the right words to say when dealing with people in person.

36. A bit different.
When I was talking with another DU person in person yesterday, she remarked that I seem way more down to Earth in person. Often, I find myself not caring so much what is necessarily thought of me when I write on DU (politically, personally, whatever). I find it great for clearing out various cobwebs on occasion. I'm far more relaxed and poised in person. I can't say I'm different, but I'm far more apt to express sillier, less 'put-together' sides of myself in writing.

I am extremely talkative and jovial in the realworld yet when I'm here, I am very reserved. Outside of DU, I enjoy attacking the messenger instead of the message but that's not easy to do when you can't get cues from body language. ;-) So which choice should I make?
