Anyone else starting to get pop ups while using Firefox
In the past week I've started to get pop up adds while using Firefox 1.0

Anyone else?

1. I get a popup at the DU front page, but that's it.
Now we'll see if that "microsoft has flaws because it's targeted" garbage holds up, as Firefox becomes more popular.

8. Give spybot search and destroy a whirl
I was getting that same pop under at the DU page and it took care of it straight away.

3. There was a long discussion of this on Slashdot yesterday

The general upshot is that the advertisers have found ways around the current popup blockers, but some sort of fix or extension will probably be forthcoming shortly.

On edit: The commonest suggestion is to use the Adblock extension.

You have to configure it yourself, but it's apparently highly effective. I'm going to install it now.

5. Are you by chance using a mac and if so are you using 10.3.8?
I've read people on Mac's who updated to 10.3.8 have been having this issue.

24. It's happening to all Mac owners, regardless of OS
From what I read at MacFixIt, this problem is exhibited on all OSes (Win,Mac,Linux) because the advertisers have found a way around blocking pop-under windows.

I'm running 10.3.8 and added a hosts file. Now I get no advertisements whatsoever. Very, very sweet.

6. pop 'unders'
no pop ups yet, but I'll find a window after I close or iconify a Firefox window. I'll have to try to pay attention so I can figure out the offenders, and tell Mozilla (if it's not already being discussed ... I haven't checked their forums)

7. Yes, I have. It's been a very slow trickle so far...
maybe one or two a day. I hope it's not an ominous trend, that's the main reason that I got rid of IE as my browser.

10. flash's geturl function fools it sometimes
though the vast majority of pops are initiated by JavaScript at either entry or exit to the site, either stored on the site server or called up from another server by a couple of lines of code. If you have JS disabled you shouldn't get pops apart from sites running flash as far as I know and it doesn't use ActiveX.

Don't know enough about the details of Firefox to comment further.

15. DU's "pop-unders" help pay the bills...
Sure, it's annoying, but DU gets a little scratch every time it happens. Let this little annoyance by - it keeps DU in the black.

... I posted about this in the "Ask the Administrators" forum. Just be careful where you click when exiting your browser.

20. I've had a couple even with adblock...
One of them was quite funny. It was just a blank window. Adblock had blocked the ads associated with the pop under but not the window itself.

21. No system is perfect, and neither is our browsers...
People can and will find a way to create pop ups under firefox, and Mozilla.org will find a way around that with their updates. Just as with any technology, IE or firefox, its a race between advertisers and those who would block them. As far as IE, well Microsoft doesn't do much about this issue. Also, be thankful that your browser no longer has OS level access to your computer. At least now, a single pop up, even if annoying, won't come up to install Gator, or some other BS software, in one click.

I fucking HATE Popups and Pop-unders. I have spent many many hours of research and installing programs to fight these intrusive pieces of shit and to keep Scumware off my machine. And now my favorite site on the entire internet is allowing those fucking things.
