Looking for comments on neurolinguistic programming
A woman in my family is involved with a man who has passive-aggressive personality disorder (yes, I know that isn't a DSM diagnosis) to the nth degree. A very difficult person to be in a relationship with. Someone has suggested that neurolinguistic programming might help him.

From what I can see on the Internet, NLP has a high probability of being a bandaid. Some call it fully bogus. It doesn't appear to be practiced by psychologists or mental health counselors, but by "practitioners" who learn the technique at an institute. It also appears to be a technique used for marketing and business practices. And it is a technique used by many magicians. What's that about??

So if any DU-ers can shed some light on NLP, I would be grateful.

1. cognitive behavioral therapy is probably the best outcome
for personality disorders like narcissistic pd and borderline pd - that's probably what you should research.

3. yes, I agree that cognitive therapy is the best approach
I'm looking for confirmation of my suspicion that NLP is mumbo-jumbo.

The problem is, as you probably know, passive aggressives and narcissists are resistant to any idea of therapy. This is precisely why NLP could appeal to them. They don't have to deal with the underlying problems.

2. It's like Deconstruction ...
... a lot of good individual techniques, encumbered by a thick, gooey layer of sour linguistic tar.

Only in the case of NLP, it comes with 100,000 eager salesmen who want nothing better than to "install a state" in the circuitry of your "submodalities" to get you to buy their worthless crap.

Do a Google search. You'll see it's 95% get-rich-quick schemes and 4% megalomaniacal pop-psych. The 1% remaining is worth looking for, but it takes time, effort, and a strong stomach.

4. that's what enlightened me.
I was quite surprised to read all the negative stuff about it, as it was recommended by someone in academia that this woman respects a great deal.
