"hey paul, do you like huey lewis and the news?"
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 09:10 PM by datasuspect
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

5. Huey Lewis is a Vietnam Vet, right?
What did he do in the 'Nam? That is what I want to know. And what is this charge on him now? Spell it out.

4. Very interesting movie
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 09:38 PM by tcfrogs
I still don't quite know exactly what to make of it, but love all the music quotes.

ON EDIT - I purposely didn't mention the movie since none of the other posters referred to it.

10. It's about the American psyche during the 80s.
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 09:51 PM by tjdee
Here's this guy, who has all these ugly thoughts, and imagines himself to be quite the success (in business and his leisurely pursuits, including the major one)... when really he's just another grunt. That's how I always took it.

Um, that's if I'm thinking of the right book/movie. :silly:

14. I just didn't get whether it was real or imagined
I never read the book, but from the movie, I can see both sides being true.

17. Never read the book.....
So hopefully someone will chime in on that, but in the movie, I felt he had imagined it all (although his secretary I think had found his doodlings).

My fave was the scene where the ATM told him to feed it the cat. :)

18. the book was more or less
a statement on the illusory nature of identity and reality.

a lot more violent detail in the book.

i think they were trying to juxtapose the image of a hard-charging wall st. young executive (an idealized situation that could be seen as evidence of actualization).

but through the veneer of success, the threat of impending dissolution ran through the book - in essence, the compulsive recitation of brand names, labels, etc. show the shallowness of this guy's world.

his murders i thought were largely fantasies he had no control over and helped to highlight the pathetic nature of reality he experienced.

28. There's an interesting visual "clue" in the movie, that's not in the book.
Regarding the whole "fantasy vs. reality" issue.

In the scene where Bateman's secretary comes to his home for their "date", the director builds tension by having him approach her from behind with a pneumatic nail-gun. He holds it an inch from the back of her head...and the audience wonders, "will he do it?".

But the director has chosen a weapon which requires a complex arrangement of electricity and a noisy compressed-air source in which to run. In the state he's holding it, it's completely impotent. If I remember correctly, the air-hose is even seen dangling uselessly from the nail-gun.

The director is playing with the audience's sense of "reality", by creating tension in a potential murder scene which is not possible.

And, by the way, trivia fans, Canadians may remember the director's father, Charlie Fahrqueson.

6. Loved "Sports"
But whenever I think about Huey Lewis and the news it reminds me of American Psycho. Not necessarily a bad thing though.

And yeah we all heard that rumour. He categorically denied it. But I hope it's true cuz I've had a long lasting crush on him.

11. Have you ever seen Robert Altman's 'Short Cuts'?
Um, Huey does some fly fishing in it. If the rumor is about, um, the rod he uses, well, it is displayed in the film.

Isn't that dialogue from 'American Psycho' in the original post?

13. I'll have to check it out
if only to see the fishing rod :) I generally like Altman's films.

And yeah, the dialogue is there in the original post. I was just letting datasuspect know I appreciated the reference. And also because it's true. I always do associate Huey Lewis and American Psycho because that's my favourite scene in the film. Apart from when the ATM tells Patrick to feed it the cat. And of course, Christian Bale exercizing in his jockey shorts.

20. What a bunch of tap-dancing ..
Sounds like Huey Lewis has a big dick. Lucky-ducky. But maybe, maybe not. I've got a 12' fly rod that I load with heavy line and a 16# leader for Tarpon. But I ain't braggin' about my fly-rod. My fly-rod gets the job done, period. Fish get fucked. They have no chance against my big rod. I'm a double-hauling fool.
